TROPICON XV Programming

Meet The VIPs Party

On Friday evening, we will have another VIP/alien gaming/casino/autograph reception in the atrium area with a cash bar. This one will be a bit different -- Judi Goodman is preparing more strangeness for you and all our VIPs. All the function areas open onto the atrium, so it is easy to meet with our guests and other attendees to continue discussions, have a drink, or arrange a special rendezvous.

Filking

At the present time (8/18/96) Tropicon XV does not have a Special Filk Guest lined up though we are working on it. Even if we don't finally get a Filk Guest there will be Filking at Tropicon! Please note that Tropicon always welcomes filkers and that we're a very filk friendly convention. So even if we don't have anyone for a Filk Guest, when the time for Tropicon arrives, we will be welcoming filkers. Please come and join us for the fun.

Art Show

Once more we will be bringing you the spectacular art show that South Florida has come to expect of Tropicon. The same rules and procedures from the past still apply -- no food or drinks will be allowed. Photography will not be allowed without the artist s permission. Bring a pen to write in bids and a wallet full of money. We re sure you ll find that special something you've been waiting for all your life.

For artists wishing to exhibit, the prices are as follows:

Panels:
4 X 8 = $20.00
4 X 4 = $12.00
Tables:
2½ X 6 = $20.00
2½ X 3 = $12.00

For more information or to reserve space, please send an e-mail message to Becky Peters or call her at (954) 563-5788 and leave a message.

Dealer's Room

Ahhh, my friends. Let me tell you about a wonderful place full of adventure, mystery, thrills, and glorious riches beyond compare. No, I do not speak of the Mysterious East. No. It is not a wondrous bazaar. No, my dear, I speak of the Tropicon XV dealers room. This November be prepared to open your wallets and buy the items of your dreams. Our dealers will be coming in from the Four Corners with wares to tantalize the most fickle fan. Everything from the tome you've been searching an eternity for, to the most magnificent of jewels for that special someone. Mayhap you are a collector of unusual items? Many such deals may be found at our tables. Open your eyes to every possibility and we will attempt to make it true.

For those of you who wish to join our unique band of entrepreneurs, it is really quite simple. Prices for individual tables are $40 for the weekend and include one (1) membership to the convention. Just fill out the membership form and indicate dealer's room. For additional information, please send an e-mail message to Judi Goodman on AOL or Genie. For more conventional communiques, drop a note to the mail address or phone the number listed in the Registration Section of the TROPICON XV Web Page.

Remember the Holiday Seasons will be here before you know it!

Video Room

Carlos Perez, former Grand Duke of Video, has gone quite insane after last year s record breaking video session and has instead decided to do this year s Progress Report. (Is this man a glutton for punishment or what?) In his place is the new Grand Duke of Video, Justin Phillips. The rumor this year is that the new Grand Duke will try to outdo all previous records and, in a grueling show of intestinal and mental fortitude, show ten days worth of video in 72 hours.

Please stop by the video room and give Justin your support and kind thoughts as he may be applying for a job with the US Postal Service before the weekend is over.

Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Blood Drive

Tropicon will once again be sponsoring the Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Blood Drive. Virginia Heinlein has authorized the use of her husband's name in memory of the importance he placed on donating blood. Members are urged to donate year round but our special time will be at Tropicon XV in November. (Tropicon account codes for later donations can be obtained at the convention.) There will be special goodies for those who contribute. The blood supply in our country is becoming an endangered species as it is so dangerously low. Pints check out but they don't check in the way they used to. This is especially needed in South Florida in November as we enter the winter season and the many visitors increase the need for blood in local hospitals. Giving blood is safe and easy. Donate a pint at Tropicon (or even afterwards) and give the gift of life.

The Blood Mobile will collecting the 'Gift of Life' on Saturday November 16th from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM at the Doubletree Guset Quaters. The South Florida Blood Bank (formerly the Palm Beach Blood Bank) will be taking donations. If committee members wish to give before the convention our code is TRON, please mention this code when you donate blood.

Con Suite

Oh, the horror...the terror... the cruelty of it all. Innocent fruits and veggies hideously sliced, diced, dipped, and voraciously consumed. Panicking petit fours and riven rolls cry desperately as they flee the carnage. Oh no! The Revenge of the Alien Mutant Killer Potatoes. Gasp!

On the other hand, if you're into that sort of thing, come and join us. We need slicers and dicers and most of all, veggie cannibals. If you want to come in disguise and you should happen to win the Hall Costume Contest, you don't have to reveal your true identity. Hall Costume and Spud Monster Contest judging will be at midnight on Saturday in the hallowed halls of the con suite.

Come and join the crunching masses in the con suite from 2PM Friday to Sunday evening when the Dog dies . All Tropicon members brave enough to venture in are welcome. BWAHAHAHA!

Charity Auctions and Donations

Each year, Tropicon makes a significant effort to provide assistance to various charities. Some are science fiction and fan oriented while others support public needs. We always hold auctions to raise funds for a local literacy group and sometimes other charities as well. This year is no exception. Some of the items up on the auctioning block in the past have been first edition books, paperback reprints, limited edition prints, manuscripts, films, games, posters, artwork, and just about anything else you could imagine. We also get some very unusual items, like the pen which Joe Haldeman used to write one of his stories.

In addition to this year s literacy auction, Tropicon will also be having another auction for an AIDS charity. This is Guest of Honor David Gerrold's special charity and we would really like to help out!

This year promises to be an excellent one for the auctions. We already have several cartons of material and we haven't even started soliciting yet! There are books, original art, computer software and some games. So bring lots of CA$H for that unusual auction item that you can't live without.

Donations Needed

Now we need your help! We are looking for something you are willing to part with for our auctions - books, toys, manuscripts, anything and everything you think other fen might like to have. We still need a lot of different items for a really great charity auction. Please remember that it's going towards some truly worthwhile causes. And all your donations are tax deductible. Please give till it hurts.

Contact our Charity Auction Coordinator, Joe Siclari, by e-mail and let him know what you will donate. Also tell him which charity your donation is for. Alternatively you can snail mail Joe at:

Boca Raton, FL ××××××-××××

Saturday Night Banquet

Our Guest of Honor banquet will be Saturday night at 6:30 PM. In addition to the Guest speeches, we are working on some special after dinner entertainment with some fun audience participation. Of course, banquet attendees get preferred seating for the Saturday night events.

And the meal itself should be great. We have arranged a special selection for your entree -- your choice of either:

Plus your meal will include Special Chef s vegetable accompaniments, salad, drink, and dessert.

All this and we've kept the price down to $24. Reserve your banquet when you send in your registration. Seating is limited. We try to accommodate everyone but last year we had to turn a couple of people away. We booked a slightly larger room this year, but don't take a chance on being disappointed. This will be a special evening. Reserve your banquet now and be sure to let us know your choice of entree.
