OOPS (NEBULA AWARD NOMINATIONS)

The Nebula Award Nominations item I had in the Bullsheet #71 missed one
important word - Preliminary. That list was the preliminary ballot. Of
the three items mentioned , only Jack Dann's novella "Da Vinci Rising"
made it onto the final ballot. Thanks to Alan Stewart for pointing out
my error.

PUBLISHING

Aurealis #18 is now available. The fiction is "Them Bones" Colin Clark,
"Ten Minutes of Midnight" J.M Earle, "Seventeen Views of Mount
Taranaki" Peter Friend, "The View From Stickney Crater" Rick Kennett,
"Time to Burn" Michael Pryor, "Platform 79" John T. Stolarczyk and
"Adeline" Lucy Sussex

AUREALIS AWARDS

These were presented at Slow Glass Books on February 28th. All the
expected people were therethe Aurealis publishing team, assorted
critics and commentators, various publisher's representatives, and
authors including Damien Broderick, Lucy Sussex, Jack Dann, Russell
Blackford, Sean McMullen and Kerry Greenwood The general tone of the
presenters was "There's been a lot of bad stuff written this year, but
we found some good stuff to give the awards to." Peter Nichols,
presenting the Fantasy Awards carried off this technique sardonically.
Rod Williams, in presenting the Horror Awards was more petulant. Alan
Stewart and Justin Ackroyd note that The Memory Cathedral is already
adorned with an "Aurealis Award Winner" sticker.

Final Awards were:

Long Science Fiction METAL FATIGUE Sean Williams
Short Science Fiction "Borderline" Leanne Frahm
Long Fantasy THE MEMORY CATHEDRAL Jack Dann
(tie) ENCHANTER & STARMAN: The Axis Trilogy Sara Douglass
Short Fantasy "The Sword of God" Russell Blackford
Long Horror No Award
Short Horror "Passing the Bone" Sean Williams
Long Young Adult MIRROR, MIRROR Hillary Bell
(tie) THE BROKEN WHEEL Kerry Greenwood
Short Young Adult "Green Monkey Dreams" Isobelle
 			Carmody

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Expatriate Aussie Fan Judith Hanna had a letter in New Scientist
8/2/97. Unfortunately, she blew it, attributing the arrival of the cane
beetle in Australia to attempts to destroy prickly pear. In the March
1st issue, Vincent Serventy of the Wildlife Preservation Society of
Australia puts the facts straight. In The Weekend Australian 7-8/3/97
Damien Broderick reviews David Morehouse's Psychic Warrior while Terry
Dowling reviews three Stephen King volumes, plus Your Personal Net
Sci-Fi. A photograph of Tasmanian zoologist and science fiction writer
Niall Doran (The Chronicles of Detrius Thesper ) appears in the
Herald/Sun 11/3/97 along with an article on the potential for cloning
thylacines. The article also mentions Craig Wellington and his new
science fiction collection entitled ThylaXene. Shane Morrissey, Jan,
Michael and Annika Wilson appear and are quoted in an eleven page
spread on Star Wars in Who Weekly magazine 17/3/97.

MAYBE WORKING IN BOOKSHOPS HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT
First it was Justin & Jenny Ackroyd with their daughter Lucy, now Ian
Mackereth reports " Graham South, owner of Infinitas Bookshop in
Parramatta, has become the proud father of Catherine Ellen (although
the hard work was done by his wife Bethany) at 0910 on Friday March 7
1997. Vital statistics: 3.46kg, 48cm." Is it like when rabbits
reproduce more in good conditions? Does this pressage an upturn in the
book trade?
