CONVENTION NEWS

NatCon Meeting
Jeremy Byrne reported from the Future of the Natcon meeting held
in the Sandringham Hotel Perth 5/3/00 "The NatCon constitution was
discussed with particular reference to the sections covering the
Ditmars and changing the constitution. Jeremy discussed the WASFF
Natcon proposal, which is to extend the WASFF indemnity and
funding model used for Swancon to the Natcons. It was the general
agreement of the meeting was that it would be advantageous to form
a national body that offers indemnity and guidance to Con
committees, on the model of the way WASFF operates. The WASFF
constitution would be a potential model for such a body. To
provide indemnity, such a body would need to be an incorporated
body, which is problematic with the current constitution.
Potentially such a national body could operate as a national peak
body, to which state organisations (both actual state
organisations such as WASFF, and possibly major organisations such
as the MSFC, particularly where no state body existed) could
affiliate. Various funding models were discussed, including
affiliation fees, and as need loans from affiliated bodies. It was
felt that the operation of such a national body would require
extensive consultation with various fandom bodies throughout
Australia, and that it was impractical to come up with such a
proposal in time for this years Natcon".
A mailing list has been established to discuss natcons. Email to
natcons-subscribe@egroups.com to join the list, and to
natcons@egroups.com to post to it.
