VALE SIR ALEC GUINNESS

Sad to note the recent death of Sir Alec Guinness, a fine actor
who appeared in several excellent films, and also an excellent
critic of the science fiction genre and its afficionadoes. The
obituary in The Australian 8/8/2000 notes "He detested the Star
Wars phenomenon and the fans that went along with it. The dialogue
was "frightful rubbish!"" Sigh. Now there was an actor worth
respect.

IN ELECTRONS

	Goblin Muse #4, August 2000 http://www.goblinmuse.com contained
"A Fine Day at the Zoo" Gene O'Neill, "Shooting Star" Robert L.
Slater, "Survival Guide" Robbie Matthews and "Pillows of Flesh,

FAN FUNDS

Irwin Hirsh notes that he has loaded 8 photos from his 1987 GUFF
trip into www.egroups.com/files/ozfan-history.

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Lucy Sussex reviews "Bosie: A Biography of Lord Alfred Douglas" in
The Age 29/7/2000. Terry Dowling reviews several F&SF Books,
including Rory Barnes & Damien Broderick's The Book of Revelation,
in The Australian 29-30/7/2000 Nick Stathopoulos is interviewed
in issue 14 of The Paper Snarl (See below for more details.)

2000 DITMARS

I gather, indirectly from various people, that information on the
progress of the 2000 Ditmars is available to those who frequent
the Eidolist and that I'm terribly slack as a newszine editor
because I don't subscribe to the Eidolist. Okay. I'll admit it;
it's all my fault. Okay? (I still haven't seen a nomination form
yet.)

PERIPATETIC FANS

South Australian Roman Orszanski was in Melbourne for an
Environmental Conference over trhe weekend of July 28-30. He
managed to catch up with an assortment of Melbourne folks in the
process.

BLOWING MY OWN TRUMPET

What's the point of running a newszine if you can't take advantage
of it. Anyway, I'd like to note the fact that, according to the
Chicon Infobot News, I got two filk songs into the Chicon 2000
filksong book.

CONVENTION NEWS

In their latest Conquest 2000 Newsletter, Conquest note that their
Guests are Virigina Hey and Richard Arnold. (Later they mention
Virginia Hey, so the first might just be a dreaded typo.)

OTHER STUFF

Paul Barnett notes "The Paper Tiger Online Gallery is at last
available for viewing.
http://www.papertiger.co.uk/ezine/fantasy_gallery/index.html

The designers at IllustratedLibrary.com, who have put the
site together, have been labouring mightily under very tight
constraints, and there are still modifications to be made to the
Gallery. In particular, for most of the artists there are yet more
pictures to be added -- for the sake of speed, the designers have
limited each artist to ten pictures, with the remainder to be
added once the initial pell-mell panic has died down a bit
(hopefully during this coming week).

LETTERATURE

Garth Spencer writes "An "SF Fan's Consumer Advice Web Site"?
*Consumer*? Well, I guess it had to happen.

I saw the mention of someone's panels on "Care and Preservation of
Fanzines" right after seeing today's e-mail to Timebinders from
Don Fitch, commenting on a New Yorker article: apparently, North
American libraries are simply giving up large, bulky collections
like old, bound newspapers, sometimes replacing them with
microfilm; however, the microfilm is sometimes unreadable. Don
pointed out that we may be best advised, if we try to preserve
fanzines in libraries, to offer them microfilm or electronic
versions."
