gossip. E-mailed direct, a once off $10 fee. Free copy from

LEIGH EDMONDS MUGGED

David Grigg reports "Leigh Edmonds was attacked on Monday
night in Ballarat by a couple of youths. He was mugged for the
small amount of money he was carrying ($15). Apparently they hit
him in the facewith a solid piece of wood, and broke both his
nose and his jaw. His jaw has been operated on in the St John
of God Hospital in Ballarat but he is home now. He won't be
able to eat solid food for at least a month. I'm sure Leigh
wouldn't want us to make too much of a fuss, but a kind word to
Valma or a get-well card would probably be well appreciated."

GOLD TO EX-MSFC MEMBER

Alan Stewart reports "Past MSFC member Jodi
Willis-Roberts won a gold medal in the Women's Shot Put F12
final at the Paralympics on Thursday 27 October. Jodi has won
gold at the Paralympics before, and has been awarded the OA."

PHANTASIA BOOKS MAY FOLD

Karen Miller, the proprietor of Phantasia Bookshop, sent
a letter noting her intention to wind down the business, perhaps
restructuring it as a direct mail/internet orders business.
Reasons cited were the declining exchange rate, a decline in
business in Penrith, an escalation in interest rates and the
imposition of the GST on books.
Susan Batho adds "They had a meeting of the Phantasia Customer
Club and the place was packed to the rafters (which is hard since
it is a very large two storey shop...) with enthusiastic
supporters of the shop. Certainly the people of Western Sydney
will continue to support a local SF specialist bookshop whatever
its form."

STEELE RUDD PRIZE

Lucy Sussex notes "Merlinda Bobis' White Turtle, a collection of
stories which included some excellent examples of fantasy (and
should have shown up in the genre awards, but didn't) has been
rewarded with the Steele Rudd Prize."

IN ELECTRONS

AntipodeanSF Issue 32 http://www.antisf.com contains "Brooklyn
Blues" Brent Lillie, "Significant Figure" Brendan Carson, "It
Does Matter" Peter Cook, "Hell Planet" Tom Dullemond and "The
Pen Is Mightier" Ashley Arnold.

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Terry Dowling reviews an assortment of books in The Australian
Review 21-22 October, including Paul Collins Cyberskin. Who
Weekly's 30/10/2000 Spotlight is on Kim Wilkins and her new novel
The Resurrectionists. The article also mentions her up-coming
young adult series. Not to be outdone, the Sunday Age 29/10/2000
features Wilkins in its Influence column. Mark Loney notes "Colin
Steele reviewed the following in the Canberra Times on the 28th
of October: The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales edited by Jack
Zipes, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion by Rhona Beare, The
Worm Ouroboros by E.R. Eddison, The Truth by Terry Pratchett, The
Discworld Fools Guild Diary by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Briggs
and Discworld Calendar 2001 by Terry Pratchett and Josh Kirby.
There was also an article by Robert Macklin about The Dish
(complaining about the treatment of Honeysuckle Creek in the
film)." Lucy Sussex reports "Lily the cat, well-known Nova Mob
identity, featured in The Melbourne Times today (October 25)
after making up dreadfully to the photographer. I am not about
to bury her in the garden, the spade in the background being
insisted on by the photographer...a ghoulish touch given that I
was being interviewed re Frances Knorr, well-known baby farmer
and amateur gardener (she buried the bodies in her back yard)."
Damien Broderick notes "Folks, an interview on Spikish matters is
now viewable at a Queensland education site:
http://www.learnscope.anta.gov.au/display_stories/1-90000/2101-2400/display_stories_2286.html"

FILM LAUNCH

Clint Flicks and Primordial Productions launched The Phandom
Menace, A documentary by Craig E. Tonkin and Warwick Holt "A
fascinating exploration of Australia's Star Wars fan community
and the impact of the latest Star Wars film, Episode 1: The
Phantom Menace." on October 30th in Prahran.

PERIPATETIC FANS

Mark Loney notes "I'm off overseas for work again. Three weeks
this time - London (6 days), Geneva (6 days), Washington DC (3
days), New York (1 day) and Los Angeles (2 days). But I don't
think that you can blame this one on Aussiecon Three."

2000 DITMARS

Jeremy Byrne notes that, in my Australian sf listing for
1999, I had listed Sean Williams' "The Land Itself" as having
been published in New Adventures In Sci-Fi. It should have been
in the 2000 listing. It was published in Eidolon 29/30. The story
is not eligible for the 2000 Ditmars, but will be eligible for
2001.

GLOBAL EPIDEMIC STRIKES!
Steven-Elliot Altman, a science fiction writer based in New York,
woke up one day and started an epidemic. Following in the
tradition of Bob Geldoff's LIVE AID, he decided to create what he
calls a "Write Aid" literary work called THE DEPRIVERS PROJECT.
Fashioning some editorial guidelines in the form of a fake
medical brochure, he called upon some notable authors to write
stories based on the concept. The proceeds of their work would be
donated to two charities: HEAL (Health Education AIDS Liaison)
and F.A.C.T (Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Therapies).
"I wanted to help the charities," says Altman, "And I wanted to
explore the boundaries of human contact. I wondered if other
authors also wanted an outlet to give something back."
They did. Among those who turned in contributions for the cause
were Janet Asimov, Maggie Estep (MTV poetess), Katherine Dunn
(Geek Love), William F. Nolan (Logan's Run), Harry Turtledove,
Sean Stewart, Tananarive Due, Kit Reed, and the late Edward
Gorey.
Their work, collected in the upcoming anthology THE TOUCH, will
be the first of a series of anthologies based on the "Deprivers"
concept, released under Byron Preiss's new imprint ibooks, and
distributed by Simon & Schuster. The book hits the shelves
October 15th, 2000.
The collected stories revolve around a fictitious epidemic called
SDS or "Sensory Deprivation Syndrome," a disease that when passed
by skin-to-skin contact can cause blindness, deafness, paralysis
and loss of memory. Individuals afflicted with SDS face isolation
when they become infected and are restricted by law from making
contact with non-infected individuals. The anthology boasts
runaways, shut-ins, assassins, numerous frustrated love interests
and of course, those ever elusive pockets of hope. Themes run
from public awareness issues to Depriver addiction and
institutionalisation.
"It's rich emotional territory, and the writers really make it
come alive," Altman comments. "I want to thank them most of all.
I hope the epidemic continues to spread."

LETTERATURE

Susan Batho notes "I still put out ReviewZine.... just that the
PhD is getting in the way at the moment. Now that they are paying
me a scholarship they actually expect me to finish the thing.
I'll be sending a general request for help shortly... believe me.
Got have my facts as accurate as I can as I am sure everyone will
pick holes in them otherwise."
