Terry Hughes(1950-2001)

Thanks to fandom, I've had and continue to have the opportunity to meet and know a surprisingly
large number of truly marvelous people - the kind of people where you count yourself lucky and
honored to know even one in a lifetime. Terry Hughes was one of those sorts. And now, he is gone.

Dan Steffan wrote the following announcement in mid-November. Terry's brother, Craig, asked that
the news be circulated within fandom:

Terry Hughes died today, Wednesday, November 14, 2001. He was admitted into an
inpatient hospice facility in Arlington, Virginia, on Tuesday and almost immediately
slipped into a coma-like state from which he did not awaken. He passed away a little
before noon today and did not suffer. Prior to that time he had been staying with his
brother, Craig and his wife and two children. He left no survivors other than his brother.
He died of complications from brain cancer, which was diagnosed almost exactly one
year ago. His remains will be cremated and his ashes will be buried in Windsor, Missouri,
in the family plot next to his parents and a sister (who died in infancy). A memorial
gathering of some kind will be held at a future date, to be announced.

Prior to his death, Terry worked for the International Monetary Fund for more than
20 years, and was scheduled to retire next spring. He was an accomplished writer,
collector and fanzine editor and was a TAFF winner and administrator in the 1970s.
Shortly before his passing he donated money to the public library in Windsor, Missouri,
(where he began his lifelong love affair with the written word) for the creation of a
permanent science fiction collection, in his name.

He was one of the best men I have ever known. He treated his friends with respect
and love and was always willing to help those in need. He will be profoundly missed
by everyone who knew him.
- Dan Steffan

A few months before the brain cancer was diagnosed, Terry joined Jeff Schalles and me as guest editor/
publishers of Science-Fiction Five-Yearly #11. While most of the work was to be done via email and
phone conversations, Terry planned to join us in Minneapolis for the printing, collation, and mailing
party. As he wrote early on, "My collating and slip-sheeting skills have atrophied but, as with piloting
an intergalactic starfighter, once you've done it, you never forget how. (Maybe why, but not how.)" But
that was not to be. A formal memorial service was held Wednesday, November 28 th in Washington at
the D. C. Ethical Society. Two fannish memorial gatherings are planned. On Saturday, December 8 th ,
Dan and Lynn Steffan will host a memorial in Arlington, Virginia, at the aptly named Galaxy Hut,
and on Saturday, December 15 th , John D. Berry and Eileen Gunn will host a similar gathering in San
Francisco. For further information on these memorial gatherings, please contact the hosts directly or
call me at 612/ 825-3558 or 612/ 964-3558.

SFFY #11 is dedicated to Terry's memory and Craig's love and support. If it reflects a small measure
of thehumor, love, and goodwill embodied in the Hughes brothers, it will be a fine tribute indeed.

In sadness and sympathy,
