Denver 2008 Staff Biographies:Michael Nelson(Photo courtesy of Chaz Boston Baden's Picture Gallery)Michael’s first Worldcon was Noreascon Two in 1980. He writes: “Not only was Noreascon Two (1980) my first Worldcon, it was my first science fiction convention. My then wife, Julie, was a fan of Isaac Asimov, so we started reading IASFM when it came out in the late 1970's. We learned about SF conventions through their convention calendar. We decided to combine a visit to see my parents (well, to drop off the kids) with our first convention... something called a Worldcon. I arrived early on Thursday and decided to volunteer while I was waiting for Julie to arrive that evening. My first gopher job was to help move a large organ from a loading dock to storage for a silent movie presentation later in the con. I remember bringing the organ into the darkened storage room and seeing a group of Jim Henson's Muppets (for an exhibit) sitting in the corner. Whoa, the real Kermit the Frog is smiling at me. “My next Worldcons were ConStellation in 1983, ConFederation in 1986, and Nolacon II in 1988. I grew strong in the art of gophering as I perfected my uber door-guarding skills. By then, I had fallen in with a bad crowd and helped organize Boxboro Fandom's final party, Louis Wu's Birthday Party, at Noreascon 3 in 1989. I also had a great time working on the massive photography project to create the convention highlights slide show for the closing ceremony. “Chicon V in 1991 was the start of a so far unbroken chain of Worldcon attendance. I held my first Worldcon staff position as co-manager of Logistics at Magicon in 1992. Then I spent the next three Worldcons - ConFrancisco, ConAdian, and Intersection - working on the Baltimore Worldcon bid for Bucconeer in 1998.” He has attended a total of 20 Worldcons so far, working as a gopher for 10 of them, and on the staff/committed level for 10. He has also worked on URcon (University of Rochester), Lunacon, Philcon, Disclave, Capclave, and the World Fantasy Con 1995 and 2003. He is a regular attendee of Capclave, Balticon, Philcon, and Boskone. When Michael was Hugo Administrator for Chicon 2000, he introduced electronic balloting for the first time. Some of the Worldcons he's worked at include:
