ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

For the past ten years in this endless quest to find all Tolkien related publications, I have had help from quite a few people. I would like to acknowledge the people who have helped me track down many of the issues that will be microfilmed in this project: Joe Christopher, Paul Ritz, Christina Scull, Jessica Yates, Nils Ivar Agøy, Manfred Zimmermann, Chuck Elston, Nancy Martsch, Bruce Pelz, Ken Nahigian, David Kopaska-Merkel, Eric Ralph, Nicholas Widdows, Taum Santoski, Anders Reutersward, Laura Ruskin, Patrik Sjowall, Lester Simons, Lee Speth, Anders Stenström, Richard West, Bernie Zuber, Jim Allan, Renee Alper, David Bratman, Frank Denton, Brin Dunsire, Anne Etkin, John Houghton, Anthea Hughes, Polly Johnson, and Catherine Litsenius.

Special thanks should also go to Nicholas Widdows who provided me with information to straighten out publication dates and number of the Fellowship of Middle Earth's publications and to Charles Noad, whose A Chronology of Events relating to the Tolkien Society is invaluable for dating old British Tolkien fanzines.

Much water has passed under the Brandywine Bridge since 1988. Many fanzines were produced since then and many have failed or merged with other fanzines. I have tried to complete a full list of all of those that are no longer being published. There are some holes in the information but I am hoping that it will not detract from the overall effect of the great number of Tolkien fanzines that have existed over the last 40 years.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTES

Bibliographic material is, at times, difficult to come by when dealing with small press publications. Numbering can be non-existent or irregular. Editors use pseudonyms. Dates are given in Elvish. All in all, fans are an odd lot and do not have a standard way of doing things. Therefore, I have tried to make some rules (which sometimes are bent) when providing this bibliographic information. Each entry is covered below.

Title: This is pretty straight forward, although in some cases the editors will change the spelling on a whim (see Stormcrow).

Date of Publication: If the date is preceded by "? –" there were issues published before the given date. If the date is followed by "– ?" there were issues published after the given date. If no date is given explicitly but the date is known then the date is given in brackets. If the date is estimated, it is shown followed by a question mark and is in brackets.

Imprint: Very few magazines have a publisher, though if it is shown, I will mention it. There are always references to publishers such as "Pant-hoot" or "Permanent Press" but I have overlooked these. Instead I have stated whether the issues have been published for an organization or independently published. Usually the place of publication is the address of the editor, where may change over time.

Editor(s): It is often the case that there is only one editor or a throng of editors. The former is probably the case of "It's mine until they pry my cold dead hands off of my typewriter" while the latter may be "I did it last time, it's your turn." If a pseudonym is used, I have tried to provide the real name of the editor in brackets.

Other Information: This is grapevine material or hearsay. I have also tried to include the editor's or the organization's other publications, if any.

Issues Microfilmed: Marquette University microfilmed these fanzines. The first occurrence of a date or number on the publication is used as seen first. Bracketing is used as it is in the information for "Date of Publication". Items in italics that follow the number and date are printing process, size, and number of pages. An asterisk following the printing process means that the copy that I have is a photocopy reproduction.

Issues Not Microfilmed: These were obtained after the microfilm project with Marquette University was completed or they were viable during the time of the microfilming. Numbering, date, etc. follow the same model as above.

Imprint: Independently published in Columbia, Missouri

Editors: James Edward Turner and David Hall

Other Information: Although not strictly a Tolkien fanzine, this has historical significance. David Hall published it between editing Mathom and Entmoot. In Entmoot 1 Hall remarks that he stole material from his "own fanzine to fill [Entmoot]." Grimoire may have been that fanzine.

Title: Gwyntystorm

Dates of Publication: September 1970 - August 1975

Imprint: Independently published in California

Editors: David Ring and Bruce McMenomy

Other Information: This was published as a lark, evidently, and is as confusing as it is interesting. Its readership was similar to that of the Mythopoeic Society. It is the only Tolkien fanzine to sport a centerfold. One would think by reading the Gwyntystorms that over 20 issues were produced but according to Christine Lowentrout the volume and issue numbers were a joke and only three issues were produced. The title is from a George MacDonald "Curdie" book.

Editor: Stanley Hoffman

Title: Yrch!

Dates of Publication: January 1968 - January 1969

Imprint: Michigan State University Tolkien Fellowship in East Lansing, Michigan.

Editors: Various (see below).

Other Information: The MSU Tolkien Fellowship also published Holbytla and Dwimmerlaik (edited by Phillips), Quendi (edited by Dabney), and Chrysophylax (unseen). Members were prolific with their own fanzines: Hilton published Incanus (unseen); Anderson edited The Fandom Blot (unseen); Mike Wood published Operand (unseen); Brown published Magic Bagel and Cosmic Cruller (unseen); and, McEvoy published The Balrog Review (unseen). The issues are difficult to date; colophons stated that they were published two or three times per month. Catherine Madsen, once of the group, states "#11...must be from Fall 1970, not 1969, for two reasons: Leny Waber and I weren't officers until that point and the phone number given...is an off-campus one." This looks to be true even though issue number 24 was dated 1969 and stated that there were 23 previous issues. Yrch is Sindarin for 'orc.'
