Daughter of Conflict

Daughter is one of my favorite paintings. Like Bladeswoman, it was done as a cover for the Sword and Sorceress series. Before I photographed my model, who was rather inexperienced with swords and swordplay, we spent the morning with masks and foils, actually fencing. She was tentative at first but soon came to enjoy it, loosing her fear of being hit and relishing each time she defeated my guard and scored hits on me. By the time we got around to taking reference photos, the sword felt like it belonged in her hand. She plopped down comfortably on a ledge while I got my camera, waiting for me to pose her. But her pose was already just what I wanted. I picked up the camera and said, "Just look me straight in the eye, and lean forward a bit, like you mean it." It was perfect. Thanks, Jennifer.
