WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Could the following, discovered by Cath Ortlieb in The Whitehorse Gazette
22/11/95 explain why Kevin Dillon hasn't been seen at conventions of late?
Somehow one doubts it, but. . .
"The Rev. Fr Kevin Dillon from St John's Catholic Church Mitcham, said he
could understand the council's logic in having only one event."

THE PAUL JOHN STATHAM MEMORIAL FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION COMPETITION 1996

$2,000 First Prize Closing January 31, 1996

Paul Statham was a highly respected member of the Out of the Ashes
writing group. Although Paul had published numerous articles in computer
magazines, his great love was for Fantasy and Science Fiction. When he died
in November 1994 after a long illness, he left behind him many fine short
stories and a partly finished novel of great promise. His family in New
Zealand have sponsored this competition to honour his memory and to encourage
new writers in the genres.
The competition is for a Fantasy or Science Fiction story between 3,000 and
5,000 words in length. The first prize will be $A2,000 with two runners-up
prizes of $A200 each.
You may submit more than one entry; however, each entry must be accompanied
by a fee of $A5.00, cheques or money orders payable to Out of the Ashes, or
the equivalent in IRC coupons from your Post Office. Mastercard, VISA and
Bankcard are acceptable if the name and signature of the cardholder and the
expiry date of the card accompany the card number.
Entries (no form required) must be in English, clearly and cleanly typed or
printed in double spacing on one side only of A4 paper. All entries must be
accompanied by an unattached front sheet stating the entrant's name, address,
pseudonym, story title and word count. The entrant's name must not appear on
the manuscript. The manuscript must have each page sequentially numbered,
showing both the title and the author's pseudonym. Manuscripts will be
destroyed, not returned.
The competition is restricted to citizens or permanent residents of Australia
and New Zealand. The winners may be required to provide proof of status. Each
story must be the original and unpublished work of the entrant and may not
previously have won a prize worth more than $100.
Competition judges will be Dr Van Ikin and Sherry-Anne Jacobs of West
Australia and Barry Watts of Victoria. The organising committee retains the
right to substitute alternative judges should the need arise. The judges
decision is final and no correspondence or conversations will be entered
into.
Entries must arrive at the address below no later than 31st January, 1996.
Winners will be notified by mail in April 1996. The names of the winner and
runners-up will be published in the next issue of the Out of the Ashes
newsletter.
The organising committee reserves the right to publish the winning and
runners-up entries in full or abbreviated form in Out of the Ashes before
the end of 1996.

WHAT ARE WE?

Australia in 99 is a bid to hold the 1999 World Science Fiction Convention in
Australia.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
For a start, we're in the middle of completing the legal requirements for
formally filing the bid with LaCon. The first part of this, lodging
information about our facilities, has been done by Stephen Boucher. The
second part, the formalisation of a board structure for the running of the
1999 World Science Fiction Convention, is in progress and should be completed
by early January.
We are also sending vast numbers of koalas, platypuses and other items to our
agents, friends and helpers in the U.S. and the U.K. who, co-ordinated by
Dick & Leah Smith and assisted by the occasional Australian visitor - usually
Stephen Boucher, Eric Lindsay or Jean Weber have been throwing wonderful
parties to promote the bid.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

To join the bid as a pre-supporting member send $10 to the bid address. We
need to send more stuff to our bidders.

Join LaCon as a supporting member ($A42 to Eric Lindsay 7 Nicholl Ave Ryde
2112)

Tell us if you intend to be in Los Angeles for the Worldcon. We need as many
people there as possible to look after the bidding table and parties.

Send us money or volunteer to run fund-raising activities. It will cost
$US1,000 per night to rent a party suite in Los Angeles.
