IN PRINT
Bloodsongs #7 has been released. Stories included are "The
Hanging People" Kaaron Warren, "Eye" by Brian Draper and
"The Bloom of Decay" by Patricia MacCormack, who, I
assume, is Australian, plus reviews and some overseas
fiction. As part of Australian Library Week - May 5-11
-The Port Phillip Library Service has a science fiction
book display at its Albert Park and Port Melbourne
branches.
ON THE AIR
John Weeks has a science fiction program Spectrum on 3MDR
97.1 FM. It is broadcast to listeners in the Dandenong
Ranges on Saturdays from 10-11am. Up-coming programs are
May 11 Festival of the Imagination; May 18 Sean McMullen
Interview; May 25 Star Wars special.
STATHAM WINNERS ANNOUNCED
James Huntley reports on the results of the Paul John
Statham Memorial F&SF Competition:- "We'll be printing
all of the top three stories in the MAY 1996 issue of Out
of the Ashes, plus Final Judge's comments, top 28 who
will receive certificates.
The NZ Press Club is organising a luncheon in early June
for presentation of the $A 2,000 to Peter Friend."
First Prize ($A2,000)
"Seventeen Views of Mount Taranaki" Peter Friend
Wellington New Zealand
Equal runners up ($A200)
"Ghosts of the Martian Dead" Paul Avery, Essendon Victoria
"Who Do you Want to Be?" Justin D'Ath, Spring Gully
Victoria
VALE
I was saddened to hear of the recent death of Margaret
Nichols. Margaret was an active member of Sydney fandom of
the late Seventies and early Eighties. I met first met her
at Monaclave where she DMed the first dungeon I played in.
A delightful person, with an infectious laugh. My
condolences to Warren.
WELCOME
Mark Denbow has joined the ranks of the sleepless. Son
Kyle was born on Saturday 27th April at about 3.00pm. The
birth was videoed. Mark's comment on first holding Kyle
was "my brain turned to mush."
1996 TEASPOON AWARDS
In order to make sure that there would be at least one
award he didn't receive at the Festival of the
Imagination, Ian Gunn presented his second set of Teaspoon
Awards. These went to:
"Roman Orszanski for the Most Creative Alteration to a
Voting Form. Roman changed the closing date on the 1995
Guff ballot without notifying the candidates who were
busily printing copies with the original date on them.
Eric Lindsay Most Selfless Vow of Poverty for avoidance
of Worldcon Bid Fund raising.
Jan Wilson World's Longest Closing Ceremony For Force One,
two and three quarter hours of sheer enjoyment.
Richard Scriven In Exchange for Best Short Fiction Ditmar,
Best Fan Writer Ditmar, Best Fan Artist Ditmar, Best fan
writer ASFMA and Best Fan Artist ASFMA. (Teaspoons are
available for the usual. Richard holds the record for the
most Teaspoon Awards - five)."
Editorial Correction:- It should be noted that the latter
five teaspoons belong, by rights, to Tara Smith who was,
according to Jonathan Strahan, the Awards sub-committee.
Richard Scriven was not part of the awards sub-committee.
