PEOPLE

Stephen Dedman is conducting a writers' workshop for Western
Australian writers of Horror, F&SF. (See W.A. Other Events for
details) Craig Hilton's _Downunderground_ a collection of his comic
strips from the Collie Mail Newspaper, is now available. (Collie
Mail Printing). Justin Ackroyd has copies at Slow Glass Books.
Galaxy Bookshop's David Hollingworth has an article on Cybermovies
in the June issue of _internet.au_.

FANDOM IN FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND
Bob Riel, our FNQ correspondent reports:-

" North Queensland is not exactly a hotbed of SF activity at the
moment. To liven things up, I've been thinking of holding a
convention. I could call it the Subyoctoscopicon - free home-brewed
beer as long as it lasts, with myself as GOH explaining to friends
why they should subscribe to Aurealis as well as People, Who, and
Penthouse. Maybe after State of Origin fever subsides.

Bob also mentions the Science Fiction Writers of Earth Short Story
competition.

" It's international, with entries from the US, Canada, UK, and even
South Africa last year. The lone entry from Down Under was mine,
which snaffled fourth place. Prizes US$200/$100/$50, entry fee US$5
for one entry plus $2 for additional entries, 2-7.5 K words, contest
format, deadline 30/10/96. Only unpublished authors are eligible,
e.g., those who have never been paid for a story at the time of
entry. This will be my last year, as I've recent sales to Eidolon
and Tomorrow SF. Entry forms are available from Gil Reis, SFWoE, PO
Box 121293, Fort Worth, TX, USA, 76121."

ON THE BOX & ON THE AIR

Judith Buckrich appeared on the Melbourne Channel 9 News 4/6/96, in
connection with plans to change St Kilda Road into a Boulevard.
Judith has a book _Melbourne's Grand Boulevard: The Story of St Kilda
Road_ to be published later in June. John Weeks' Science Fiction
radio program, Spectrum, on 3MDR 97.1FM continues, featuring: June 8
Star Wars, June 15 Bruce Gillespie, June 22 Katharine Shade.

DR WHO STUFF
With the recent death of Jon Pertwee and the release of the new Dr
Who, the old time lord has got quite a bit of coverage in the media
of late. Who Weekly 3/6/96 has an article on Pertwee (if you can
get past the nude Olympians, it's on page 40) and The Sunday Age's
View magazine has a piece on the new Dr Who, featuring a boxed
inset on Dr Who by Robert Jan & Paula Ruzek.

AUSSIES AT WISCON
The much travelled Lucy Sussex reports that "Wiscon 20 (feminist sf)
in Madison, Memorial day weekend 24-27 May, included a sizable
Aussie contingent - Jean Weber, plus writers Lucy Sussex, Rosaleen
Love, Alice Nunn (Tiptree award runner-up 1993), Jane Routley and
Tess Williams, and postgrad scholars Sylvia Kelso, Helen Merrick and
Justine Larbalestier. Though jetlagged to the eyeballs, all of the
above had tremendous fun, the writers in particular discovering that
(a) people had heard of them (b) people had read them (c) people
really liked their work. Enormous fun was had by all. An A in 99
party was held and went well. "
