BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Greg Egan got an extensive mention in the Australian Rolling
Stone's October "Hot Issue". The article, by Stuart Clarke
mentions all the novels, including "An Unusual Angle". Derek
Screen & Sharon Tapner found themselves as page four girls in the
Herald Sun 18/9/96. they were extolling the virtues of private
health cover. LynC would probably rather not have been in the
papers. She was assaulted in broad daylight in Flinders Street
resulting in severe bruising, broken teeth and a cracked jaw. The
police did get the bloke who assualted her.
IN PRINT
Jane Routley has sold two more Mageheart novels to AvoNova. Lucy
Sussex notes that she has "sold Black Ice, a horror novel, to
Hodder Headline, and The Penguin Friend, about Eudyptula minor
(fairy penguin to you) to Omnibus." Damien Broderick reports "I've
signed with Reed Books Australia to write a popular science book
on the Vinge Singularity, transhumanism and the like, called The
Spike. It will be pushed by Reed at the forthcoming Frankfurt Book
Fair. And just finished proofing The White Abacus, due from Avon
in NY next March." The October Rolling Stone reviews Linda
Jaivin's Rock 'N' Roll Babes From Outer Space.
PEOPLE
Shayne McCormack is back in the book business, being a partner in
and manager for Phantasia in Penrith High Street.
SPORT DANGEROUS TO HEALTH
American Fan Artist David Thayer (Teddy Harvia), who is obviously
going for the sympathy vote in the 1999 DUFF race, reports "I broke
my nose last Thursday helping to coach my daughter Matilda's
softball team when a ball deflected by a bat hit me. A trip to the
emergency room and three hours later the flow of blood finally
stopped. No serious long-term effects but right now wearing
glasses is uncomfortable and the pain pills inhibit my ability to
both drive and draw. The strangest part was, after numerous times
in the emergency for the kids, sitting there with Matilda holding
my hand to reassure me saying, 'You'll be all right, Dad.'"

THE PAUL JOHN STATHAM MEMORIAL FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION
COMPETITION 1997
$2,000 First Prize
Closing January 31, 1997
Paul Statham was a highly respected member of the Out of the Ashes
writing group. Although Paul had published numerous articles in
computer magazines, his great love was for Fantasy and Science
Fiction. When he died in November 1994 after a long illness, he
left behind him many fine short stories and a partly finished
novel of great promise. His family in New Zealand have sponsored
this competition to honour his memory and to encourage new writers
in the genres.
The competition is for a Fantasy or Science Fictionstorybetween
3,000 and 5,000 words in length. The first prize will be $A2,000
with two runners-up prizes of $A200 each.
You may submit more than one entry; however, each entry must be
accompanied by a fee of $10.00 ($AUS or $NZ), cheques or money
orders payable to Out of the Ashes, or the equivalent in IRC
coupons from your Post Office. Mastercard, VISA and Bankcard are
acceptable if the name and signature of the cardholder and the
expiry date of the card accompany the card number.
Entries (no form required) must be in English, clearly and cleanly
typed or printed in double spacing on one side only of A4 paper.
All entries must be accompanied by an unattached front sheet
stating the entrant's name, address, pseudonym, storytitle and
word count. The entrants name must not appear on the manuscript.
The manuscript must have each page sequentially numbered, showing
both the title and the authors pseudonym. Manuscripts will be
destroyed, not returned.
The competition is restricted to citizens or permanent residents
of Australia and New Zealand. The winners may be required to
provide proof of status. Each story must be the original and
unpublished work of the entrant and may not previously have won a
prize worth more than $500 nor have been a winner or runner-up in
the prior year of this competition.
Competition judges will be Dr Van Ikin of Perth, West Australia,
and others to be appointed. The organising committee retains the
right to substitute alternative judges should the need arise. The
judges decision is final and no correspondence or conversations
will be entered into.
Entries must arrive at the address below no later than 31st
January, 1997. Winners will be notified by mail in April 1997. The
names of the winner and runners-up will be published in the next
issue of the Out of the Ashes newsletter.
The organising committee reserves the right to publish the winning
and runners-up entries in full or abbreviated form in Out of the
Ashes before the end of 1997.
