ACKROYDIANA
Justin and Jenny Ackroyd became the proud parents of Lucy
Hannah Ackroyd on December 18 1996. It was a busy holiday
season for Justin too, as he prepared for his move downstairs
into the ground floor of 305 Swanston Street. I think he is fed
up of hearing comments about returning to his roots. Needless
to say, the usual victims were found to heft books and assist
in preparing the new venue. Aged characters such as Handfield,
Middlemiss, Voermans and Ortlieb were joined by younger blood
provided by Julian Warner, Danny Heap, Alan Stewart & Steve
Paulsen, all of whom did the donkey work, while Justin & his
Dad did the real stuff.

TADA!
With the accepted theatricality, Don Ashby announced that he
and Max are the proud parents of Taliesin Alfred David Ashby ,
born on January 6th at 5.20 pm in the Pambula Hospital. Max and
Taliesin rated a full row of ticks and Don announced in the
modern method - an e-mail message with a jpeg attachment
showing proud mum, brother and Taliesin. What with the new
Ackroyd and the new Ashby, I'd blame Easter conventions, except
that Don doesn't get to conventions anymore.

CONGRATULATIONS
Visiting ex-fans Jack Herman and Cath McDonnell inform us that
Warren Nichols & Christine Smith of Sydney or thereabouts,
announced their engagement on January 18th. My best wishes to
both and their children.

CONDOLENCES
I was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Eric Lindsay's
mother. While I never met her, there was a certain stability in
Eric's Faulconbridge connection.

FAN MOVEMENTS
Jo and Carey Handfield will continue to haunt the Ivanhoe
region, having purchased new accommodation there. British fan
Christina Lake has been sojourning on our shores for a few
weeks, turning up at Perry Middlemiss's New Year's Eve Party
and at other events. Kim Huett is heading in the opposite
direction - for the Attitude Convention in Britain followed by
a lightning tour of the fannish hot spots in the U.S.. He
announces that in the provocatively titled Because I Can.
Ex-Tasmanian Giulia de Cesare and BritFan Steve Davies were
married in Tasmania and then did a little touristing, including
getting to Cheryl Morgan's Burns Night Party.

LEWIS MORLEY & DARK CITY
Lewis Morley has been working on Dark City, the latest opus
from Alex Proyas of The Crow

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Terry Dowling reviews Holy Fire, Idoru, New Legends and
Sailing Bright Eternity in The Australian 4-5/1/97. Lucy
Sussex got to write one episode of the Age's round robin
mystery story "Bodyline". Her's appeared in The Age 10/1/97.
The January issue of the magazine internet.au had science
fiction as its cover article. Sydney's David Hollingworth makes
brief mention of Australian newsgroups, the Vicnet site and the
UFP site before moving to the overseas sites. The Launch Pad
section mentions a couple more Australian sites. Norstrilia
Press triumvir Rob Gerrand appeared on the Channel 9 News
17/1/97 as an apologist for the ANZ Bank's attempts to force
people to make more use of ATMs and less use of tellers. Peterb
reports " A new sci-fi radio show is just about to begin in
Sydney. It is called SMEG! and will focus on both tv and
written SF. It is on Sydney frequency 88.5FM and is on
community radio station 2RRR. We are looking for anyone who has
a club or convention they want to plug on the show. Drop me an
e-mail and let me know if you have anything that you want
promoted and if you are in Sydney, tune in. Wednesdays 7.00pm"
peterb@zip.com.au. Anzapa member Sally Yeoland is extending her
LoC writing skills to The Age Green Guide 23/1/97 where she
has a letter dealing with the poor tennis coverage. Sydney fan
and gamer Gregor Whiley gets a guest review of SBS's Hitler's
Henchmen in The Sydney Morning Herald's Guide 20-26/1/97.
Meanwhile the computer section of The Australian 21/1/97
featured material on HAL's birthday, William Gibson and the
X-Files.

STATHAM DEADLINE EXTENDED
James Huntley reports "The final date for the John Paul Statham
Memorial competition is extended to Monday March 3, 1997 = in
the mail when we pick it up that day from PO Box 990 Artarmon
NSW 2064. The extention is due to the fact that we have not had
an issue of Ashes out for so long (see next paragraph). The
issue we are finally printing this week includes the top three
stories from last year's competition.

Now to the Out of the Ashes newsletter. This next issue will
be the very last issue. The growing subscription base has
created too much administration. Ashes has been taking too much
of our time, to the detriment of our own writing.

As we still want to help other writers, we will use the money
we've been putting in to keep Ashes going to help people who
are writing. We will do this by running more competitions like
the John Paul Statham Memorial, the money for which was
supplied by Paul's sister in New Zealand."

ALWAYS BACKUP
I was foolishly playing with a new piece of hardware the other
day and, it turned out that it corrupted my entire hard drive.
Though I had a reasonable set of backups, that did not include
the list of people who have paid to get the Bullsheet sent
electronically. I think I know who you all are, but, if I miss
anyone, please drop me a rude note.
