IN PRINT
Sally Beasley provides the following "Dave [Luckett] has had a
sequel to "The Best Batsman in the World" accepted by Omnibus. It
will be called "The Last Eleven" and may be out later this year. He's
also had accepted (again by Omnibus) a longer, young adult novel,
which will probably *not* be called its current working title of "A
Dark Winter" and will probably come out next year. It's still in the
process of fine-tuning rewrite. However, he's now working full-time
(having had to move over from CES to DSS when the government
abolished the former) and is finding it's difficult to get enough
time to write. "
Damien Broderick is also busy " THEORY AND ITS DISCONTENTS has
beenpublished by Deakin University Press (a critique of some
poststructuralist strategies and tactics, with a kind of discursive
'theory of everything' that tries to link shifts in fashion in
science and the humanities with long historical cycles; it is
dedicated jointly to the memory of Isaac Asimov and James Blish)
ZONES (co-author Rory Barnes) published by HarperCollins
Australia (young adults sf novel, using the telephone for time
travel)
'Schrodinger's Dog' made it into both the Stahan and Byrne
YEAR'S BEST AUSTRALIAN SF AND FANTASY 1, and Gardner Dozois's YEAR'S
BEST.
I have had a long story, `The Womb', bought by Jack Dann and
Janeen Webb, for their anthology DOWN-UNDER DREAMING"
Isobel Carmody has a story in this year's The Year's Best Fantasy and
Horror edited by Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling
BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Holodiction featured in the Herald Sun Monday May 12. It featured a
trekker called Jody De'ath, sandwiched between two cardboard cutouts
- labelled "Spocks" by the Herald Sun. The front one was actually a
placard Picard.
Not Australian, I know, but I rather liked the review of the Nichelle
Nichols album in Record Collector #211 March 1997 that said "That's
Lieutenant Uhura to you and me, the dusky beauty who distracted
millions of (male) viewers of the mighty 'Star Trek' from William
Shatner's not inconsiderable paunch.
Aussiecon Three
Mike Glyer notes "L.A.con III, the 1996 World Science Fiction
Convention, has sent pass-on funds checks the next three Worldcons,
LoneStarCon2, Bucconeer and Aussiecon 3. Each organization received
$22,000; the total distributed was $66,000.
These payments fulfill L.A.con III's commitment to share its surplus
under the "Pass-Along Funds" agreement, a voluntary agreement between
Worldcon committees to divide 50% of any surplus among their three
successors. (But only those successors who make the same promise.) In
return, participating Worldcons are eligible to receive a share of
their predecessors' surpluses under the same formula."
Eric Lindsay adds "Aussiecon is making great leaps. The State of
Illinois finally completed their red tape, so we can legally get a US
check account. I heard that on May 1st. Victoria did much better. The
red tape there was done by mid February (of course, that was memerly
a change of name, not a whole new corporation). Sigh!"
TWO WEDDINGS AND ...
James (Jocko) Allen has been attending weddings "Went to Bridh
Hancock and Ann's wedding in Riddell's Creek on 5th of April, Nice
sunny afternoon, lots of people, in the backyard of their house. Then
there was MSFC/Phryne Fisher club members Gary Nichol and Angela
Chiccoti's wedding where I was best man and Jeanette was Matron of
honour it was wet, but fun. That makes three best man speeches I have
delivered--The worrying about them is why I am not a politician, I am
sure."
