CONTEST

Bob Riel provides the following information about the 17th Annual
Science Fiction Writers of Earth SF/F Short Story Contest. "It's a
unique international competition open only to *unpublished* authors,
i.e., those who have never received $$$ for a published piece of
fiction. And it's truly cosmopolitan, with entries from the US, UK,
Canada, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, even Sri Lanka. Last year
Australia took out 2nd place, the Yanks claimed 1st, 3rd, and 4th,
with a Pom and a Canadian in the top ten. There's a bit of a rivalry
developed betwixt Oz and the Brits -- they beat us in '95, but in
'96 we out polled them for entries and relegated them to fifth.
This year, though, they're planning to blitz us (I'm in e-mail
contact with Dilip Agarwal, the Londoner who's coordinating their
effort). Plus I understand that Grand Master Arthur Clarke Hisself
is pushing the Sri Lankans. I've made an arrangement with Contest
Administrator Gil Reis in Texas, USA, to accept entry fees in AUD
(A$6.50 for the first entry, $3.00 for each additional), which saves
currency conversion costs and covers postage to the US, (though not
IRC's for results). Prizes are US$200/100/50, and results appeared
last year in Locus, Science Fiction Chronicle, and other neat
places. Deadline is 30 October. Anyone interesting in joining the
Australian side can get entry forms by sending an SSAE to SFWoE, C/-
Rob Riel, 11 Kepler Street, Wulguru, QLD, 4811, or check out their
website at http://www.flash.net/~sfwoe.

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

God of Small Things is #3.The Age 17/5/97" P.S. on May 24th, The
Memory Cathedral made #1.

EVENT INFORMATION

Susan Smith Clarke sent the following piece.

"Star Trek: The Exhibit-be a part of it!
You can be part of Star Trek: The Exhibit, the blockbuster new ST
exhibition coming to the Powerhouse Museum! The Powerhouse is
looking for enthusiastic fans to act as volunteer guides/ explainers
within the exhibition on both weekdays and weekends between
September and February.
If you are over 18, live within easy reach of Sydney, are prepared
to make a regular commitment of your time and love to tell people
about Star Trek (especially if you have prior experience in public
contact), then we'd love to hear from you. The museum will provide
full training, a volunteer benefits program and, if you don't have
your own ST costume, a Star Fleet uniform for you to wear on duty in
the exhibition.
At the moment, we are preparing a register of interested volunteers:
interviews and final selection will take place within a few months.
If you would like to be considered as a Star Trek volunteer, then
please contact the Powerhouse Museum's Volunteer Co-ordinator,
Lorraine Barlow, on (02)92170386.
Could You Be a Federation Ambassador?
Do you have a blockbuster Star Trek costume? Would you like to be
invited to the opening night of the Powerhouse Museum's blockbuster
Star Trek exhibition? Then you could be just the fan we're looking
for!
The Powerhouse is seeking fans with highly detailed and authentic
Star Trek costumes to act as 'Federation Ambassadors' for the
exhibition's opening night. You need to have a great costume, not be
media shy, and be prepared to act as a guide/host during the
evening's festivities. If you think this could be you, please send a
photo of yourself in costume, with a brief outline of any previous
public contact/media experience you may have had to:
Kerrie Dougherty, Curator of Space Technology, Powerhouse Museum,
P.O. Box K346, Haymarket NSW 2000
The museum will select a small group of fans from all applications
received by July 31, to act as Federation Ambassadors on opening
night, September 25."

Jane Routley will be signing at Slow Glass Books on Friday 13th
June.
