VALE GEORGE TURNER
1916 - 1997
George Turner, writer, critic and one of the strongest voices in
Australian fiction died on Sunday June 8, aged 80. He had a massive
stroke on Thursday and did not regain consciousness. George made a
huge contribution to the development and improvement of Australian
science fiction. His dry wit and incisive comment made him an
invaluable contributor to any discussion of science and fiction. He
promised to dance on the tables with Bruce Gillespie at Aussiecon
Three; I'm sorry I won't see that.
BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
The head of the Melbourne Convention and Marketing Centre was
interviewed on 3LO on Friday May 30th and made extensive mention of
Aussiecon Three and Star Walking. Jenny Pausacker reviewed Kerry
Greenwood's Cave Rats in The Age 31/5/97. Lucy Sussex reviews Nina
Bawden's A Nice Change in The Saturday Age 7/6/97. Robert Jan got a
third of a page coverage in The Age Metro 9/6/97. The article, headed
Monster Mache, dealt with his costuming, mentioning Austrek, The
Australian Costumers' Guild and the SCA.
Force 2 got a fair amount of media coverage. The Herald/Sun 2/6/97
featured a photo of Kenny Baker with R2D2 and gave the convention a
plug. The Sunday Age 8/6/96 reports that Lucasfilm's Stephen Sansweet
announced cast details of the new Star Wars movie at Force 2. The
young Obi Wan will be played by Ewan McGregor while Jake Lloyd plays
the young Darth Vader (One assumes this means Anakin Skywalker).

IN PRINT
Lucy Sussex notes "The Scarlet Rider was short-listed for best first
novel in the Kelly awards (for crime writing) Didn't win, but
wothehell." Bob Riel mentions a new Australian SF/F magazine, Under
Magellanic Clouds, edited by Marijke Fitzgerald, 1640 Mongogarie Rd,
Upper Mongogarie NSW 2470 (066) 64-1272. It is looking for original
stories 1,500 to 4000 words 0r shorts 500 to 1,500, no horror. Prefers
softer, more social SF. Rejections within one month. Possible
acceptances could take longer. Bob also mentions his hope that
Australian writers will attack the SFWoE contest in droves. (See The
BS 77 for further details.) Yvonne Rousseau sends news of the Babel
Handbooks studies of fantasy and science fiction writers. Each
includes a bibliography. The first six offerings, to be launched in
July, are David Lake on H.G. Wells: The Time Machine; Norman Talbot
on William Morris: The Gothic Age Romances; Yvonne Rousseau on Cherry
Wilder: the Torin and Rhomary SF; Rosaleen Love on Michael Frayn;
Sylvia Kelso on Sherri S. Tepper and David Connell on Michael
Moorcock. Each title retails for $10. Contact series editor Norman
Talbot, Nimrod Publications, P.O. Box 170, New Lambton, NSW 2305 for
more details.
FAN STUFF
Susan Smith-Clarke reports, regarding her engagement "My brother Chris
was married on the 20th May and my eldest daughter Evelyn (who was
nearly born at the first convention I chaired - Syncon 75) was married
this year on January 18. It's been quite a year for us all.
And then Kerrie Dougherty suggested we could make it three this year
by getting married at the Star Trek exhibit - tempting, but although
my family would be in it (my Mum was the first one on the block with
her own Trek Uniform - we embarrass the children no end at times!),
I'm afraid the Bathos aren't quite that ... zany. Mind you, if it was
on a steam train, they'd be in it! (or on it)
Some sad news: Shayne McCormack's father passed away. Shayne's
parents always encouraged all of us around the place - when we were
setting up the first Australian Trek club, putting out the first
Australian Trek zine, etc... Her mother is presently in a nursing home
after a major stroke."
Condolences also to John Bangsund, whose mother Ivy died in May.
AUSSIECON THREE
Regarding the death of George Turner, Perry Middlemiss, the Aussiecon
Three Chair, notes " At the time the Aussiecon committee (or the Ain99
committee as it was then) asked George if he would be our guest of
honor he suggested that we should choose someone younger. We
disagreed and told him that our aim was to honor him. and his work.
Again at his 80th birthday party last year (after a previous stroke
had left him rather frail and easily tired) he again pointed out that
he may not be able to make the convention. I told him that if that
was to occur it wouldn't change our minds and that we intended to
honor him anyway. I tried to make light of it, but you could tell he
was worried that he wouldn't be with us. It strikes me as a measure
of the man that he should feel compelled to suggest such a course of
action.
Although I haven't spoken directly to all members of the Executive as
yet I feel safe in stating that although George will not be with us in
1999 in a physical sense, he will be there in spirit and that we
intend to honor him as best we can. Our Guests of Honour for 1999
will be the same then as they are now - namely, Greg Benford, Bruce
Gillespie and George Turner."
