Science Fiction Association by Marc Ortlieb, P.O. Box 215, Forest

GILLESPIE ASTONISHED!

"Bruce Gillespie is astonished to find himself made George Turner's
literary executor. Among other things, he has to find out what a
literary executor actually does. As soon as practicable, he will
appeal for George Turner original manuscripts and correspondence for
photocopying and archiving. Various projects to honour George's life
and work will follow." brg

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Rob Gerrand appeared, in his professional role, representing the ANZ
Bank, on the Channel 9 News 13/6/97.

The Herald/Sun 18/7/97 features a piece about four minutes of bits
snipped from Dr Who being found in Australia. It mentions Ellen
Parry a postgrad at Brisbane University who is studying sf film and
books and Sydney's Damian Shanahan who is writing a history of Dr
Who censorship in Australia. The BBC has asked for the cuttings to
be used in a forthcoming Dr Who special. And who said that
censorship was a bad thing?

The Saturday Age 21/6/97 suffered an outbreak of science fiction
and sf fans. Jack Daan's[sic] Memory Cathedral was number 8 on
their fiction Best Seller list. Jenny Pausacker reviews Andrew
Lansdown's Dragonfox and Lucy Sussex gets almost half a sheet to
review Anita Brookner's Visitors.

The Sunday Age 22/6/97 devoted almost half a page to SF, Horror &
Crime fanzines in its Agenda section. The photo featured Aurealis,
Bloodsongs and Mean Streets. Quoted are Bruce Gillespie and Dirk
Strasser, though Dirk doesn't seem to enjoy having Aurealis
described as a fanzine. Bruce laments not having enough money to
publish SF Commentary. Thyme and Eidolon get a guernsey. It's not
too bad an article, as far as media coverage of fanzines goes, and
is reasonably accurate, except that it gives Bruce's defunct GPO Box
as his address.

IN PRINT
Richard Harland, author of The Vicar of Morbing Vyle, mentions that
his new book The Dark Edge - science fantasy with thriller
elements, being brought out by Pan Macmillan this August.

FAN STUFF

Cheryl Morgan has had no luck finding further work in Australia and
is heading US wards at the end of the month. She is maintaining some
Australian ties; as she will remain in ANZAPA and is threatening to
return for Basicon 2 and Aussiecon Three.

Joyce Scrivner notes that Harlan Ellison listed some of his
favourite non-US authors of late, and the following Australian
authors were on the list. Feel free to pick your own favourite
spelling error (attributed to the newsgroup poster, not to Harlan)

Terry Dowling  Blue Tyson; Lucy Sussex; Sean (Shawn ?) McMullen;
Peter Carey War Crimes, Bliss; Russell Blackburn; Greg Egan; LeAnn

Gerald Smith reports on goings on from Sydney "We attended the
wedding of Warren Nicholls and Christine Smith (one half of the once
infamous Smith twins) on Saturday 21 June. Held at the Hydro
Majestic Hotel in Medlow Bath (once the site of the legendary
Medventions) the wedding attracted a wide selection of fans and past
fans including many not seen in years. Even Robin and Alycia Johnson
took time off in their jetsetting lifestyle to join the party.

One unfortunate piece of news learnt at the wedding was that William
Good, once well known in Sydney fandom and intended best man for
Warren, was in hospital following an altercation with a taxi. The
news is that he is doing fine but won't be mobile for a little while
yet.

A small group of die hard fans still also meets on Thursday nights
at the Elysee Coffee Lounge (corner Pitt and Bathurst Streets - the
cafe down the road from where Galaxy Bookshop used to be) before
going out to dinner somewhere. Any fans visiting Sydney are welcome
to join us. "
