GARTH NIX TO BE TELEVISED

Garth Nix reports "My new book, Shade's Children, will be in
Australian bookshops in August (and the US in September). Between
The Lines (ABC TV) interviewed me recently. It goes to air 13
August. Apparently there will also be an interview with Ben Bova
that night. And I have just been picked up as a replacement SF/F
guest for the Brisbane Writers Festival in September, after someone
else dropped out.

Then I'm off to promote SHADE'S CHILDREN and the paperback of
Sabriel in the US in early to mid-October, probably visiting
Seattle, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, New York and then San
Francisco on the way home. "

GREG EGAN AWARD NOMINATIONS

Greg Egan has received two nominations in the overseas short story
category of the Japanese Seiun Award. Winners will be announced at
Japan SF Convention '97, in Hiroshima in August and re-announced at
LoneStarCon II. Greg was nominated for "Cocoon" and "Unstable
Orbits in the Space of Lies". He is up against Greg Bear, Gregory
Benford, Avram Davidson, Phyllis Eisenstein, Neil Gaiman and
Frederik Pohl

SUSSEX AT CLARION WEST

Lucy Sussex will be one of the writers in residence at the 1998
Clarion West Science Fiction Writers' Workshop. Other writers
involved in the workshops are Paul Park, George R.R.Martin, Connie
Willis, Gardner Dozois and Carol Emshwiller

IN PRINT

Lucy Sussex's Black Ice is now in the shops. Lucy adds " Apart
from being about spiritualism and the Internet, it also quotes a
chunk of Terry Frost (with his permission). One of the issues I
touched on in the book is pedophilia and the Net, and as Terry had
an article in Mimezine Flashback that struck me as ideal, I used
it. In Black Ice the article appears in a newspaper similar to
Beat, in a column called Terry's Rant. And he also rings up and
abuses another character during a radio talkback program. Other
than that, there's no similarities to the real Terry. One line got
censored by the publisher, otherwise the article is pretty much as
Terry wrote it."

Eidolon 24, their special women's issue, has been released. It
features fiction by Jodie Kewley, Karen Attard, Jane Routley,
Tracey Rolfe, Alison Goodman & Carole Nomarhas. There is an
interview with Lucy Sussex, a guest editorial by Sarah Endercott
and an article on Australian women's fantasy and sf in 1996 by
Jenny Pausacker.

BAD NEWS

Allan Bray, one of the fans responsible for the revitalisation of
South Australian Fandom following the first Aussiecon, has been
diagnosed with brain tumours. He is due for CAT Scans on Tuesday
July 29 and then for biopsies on the Wednesday. Allan says he is
having trouble, particularly with language and reading. As a
recipient of his generosity while I lived in Adelaide, I wish him
all the best.

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Damien Broderick is featured in The Weekend Australian's Syte
Magazine , July 19-20,under the heading The Spike Man Cometh. He
also reviews feminist books by Jean Curthoys and Alison Weir in
The Australian Weekend Review July 26-27. In the same issue,
Terry Dowling reviews Damien's The White Abacus, plus Simon Brown's
Winter and Howard Waldrop's Going Home Again. Race Matthews has a
letter dealing with the Victorian government's treatment of the
auditor general in The Age 22/7/97.

AUSSIECON THREE

Eric Lindsay notes "Re the Aussiecon Progress report, I mailed the
masters to Dick Smith last Wednesday (9th July?) and Dick has
acknowledged receipt, so overseas fans should get their copies next
month, I'd imagine (depends mostly on the printer now).

Australian fans on the web can see a rough on the web site, with a
final copy to appear in a few weeks, once I find out if any last
minute changes were made (and once I scan a few photos I used,
other than ones already on the web).

I'd have liked a little earlier date for it, but sometimes real
life just gets too much in the way. We said mid year. I figure July
1 was the middle of the year. "

CONVENTION NEWS

Swancon 23 have added Dave Luckett to their Guest List. Basicon 2
has released its latest Progress Report, mentioning, among other
things, that the YWCA accommodation is booked out and that
Enterprise will be running a ST:TNG 10th Anniversary Party on the
Saturday Night of the Convention.

Derek Screen notes "...although we have been trying for over two
months, we have been advised that we will not be able to get a
convention here in Melbourne with Patrick Stewart.

Patrick's contracted only Australian appearance will be in Sydney
on August 9th and will include Jenniffer Lien from Voyager.

If you are interested in attending this event at a cost of $100,
please call Holodiction in Sydney (the organisers) on 02 9311 3841
to arrange that. "

FAN DOINGS

Melbourne fans Terry Frost and Alan Stewart visited Sydney over the
weekend 26-27th July. The source for this piece of gossip said that
she'd rather not be acknowledged. That Alan was in Sydney was
confirmed by Clive Newall and Justin Ackroyd, both of whom saw him
in a Today report on a Scrabble tournament (28/7). Terry was
nowhere in evidence.
