BILL ROTSLER

I was saddened to note the recent death of American fan and
professional Bill Rotsler. Not only did he produce superb fan art
at the drop of a hint, but he was the 1977 DUFF winner and proved
an excellent guest at both the 1977 Natcon and the later Melbourne
convention. I have delightful memories of the scurry of artwork he
produced at a panel where Kitty Vigo noted that her men had to
measure up to her standards. The panel was regularly disrupted as
each cartoon made its way around the audience. I particularly
enjoyed the story he told of the porn magazine where every
contribution, bar one, was Bill under a different pseudonym.

IN PRINT

Steven Paulsen notes "Looks like I have unwittingly shared in an
award. I happened to be browsing the web today and found a press
release from Charles Ryan on behalf of the 1997 Origins
International Games Expo and Fair:
'The Winners of the 1996 Origins Awards are: Best
Game Related Fiction of 1996 - The Cthulhu Cycle (Chaosium) edited
by Robert M. Price .' Then all the contributors are listed
including myself for my story "In the Light of the Lamp". I wonder
if there's money involved ."

Joe Szakmary, MSFC member and Melbourne resident, has had a story,
"Winged Friend", published in a Hungarian anthology, CSILLAGHAJOK.
The anthology also includes Greg Egan's "The Infinite Assassin",
"Eugene" and "The Caress".

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Damien Warman has been reading recently "I notice Russell Blackford
was in The Australian Higher Ed Supplement on Wednesday, in his
role as executive director of the Australian Higher Eduction
Industrial Association; no mention of his skiffy habit, though."

Radio National's Science Show had a brief piece on the science in
science fiction (18/10/97) but did not get far past Lost in Space
and Star Trek. The powerhouse's Star Trek Exhibit got another plug.

AUSSIECON THREE

Progress Report One has finally reached Australian Members. It has
a Marilyn Pride cover and looks pretty much like a Progress Report.

THE HITCHING POST
Alan Stewart notes that Alan Small (ASMS) married Tracey Lewis on
18 October.

FAN FUNDS

There seems little interest in a 1998 GUFF race to send an
Australasian fan to the U.K. for their 1998 EasterCon. The race may
be cancelled, which would mean that the next GUFF race will bring a
European Fan to Aussiecon Three. Rumour has it that there are two
contenders for the 1998 DUFF race, which will send an Australasian
fan to BucCONeer. Nothing has been heard from the FFANZ
Administrator.
