IN PRINT
Kate Forsyth reports "The Sydney Writers' Festival is planning to
host a fantasy panel at the festival in May 12-17, 1998 (in Sydney,
of course).. Guests are myself, Garth Nix and Raymond Feist from
the US. I don't know yet who is the convenor and I think the date
for the panel is the 15th of May.
My web site is up and running. The address is
http:\\www.ozemail.com.au\~kforsyth
'The Witches of Eileanan' has been accepted for publication by
Penguin in the US - it's coming out under their ROC imprint, with
Book 1 named after the title series (ie 'The Witches of Eileanan'
rather than 'Dragonclaw'. Too many other dragon books there at the
moment I think. Due for release in Jun/Jul 1998)"
Sue Isle has good news "I've sold a story, "Chadriki Dance" to the
US magazine Tales of the Unanticipated.
I also asked for my Tin Duck nomination to get withdrawn as I do not
consider myself a non-professional writer!"
BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Ken Moylan contributes "Janeen Webb & Andrew Enstice were heard on
Late Night Live (ABC Radio National, 10:10-11:00) on 11/3/1998
promoting their book Aliens and Savages." Alan Stewart passed on the
Melbourne Yarra Leader 9/3/98, which features an article on the
book..
Colin Steele has a letter decrying the downsizing of the Books
section in the Sunday Age 22/3/98. Deadly Friends by Claire
Carmichael, Margaret Clarke and Christine Harris is reviewed in The
Weekend Australian 21-22/3/98
GUNNY CROOK AGAIN
Despite an earlier all-clear, Ian Gunn's cancer has recurred. Ian
notes
"My cancer has flared up again in exactly the same spots, and I
resume chemotherapy tomorrow (Tuesday 17th)
This time they're going to hit it harder with extra drugs and
five-day treatment sessions instead of two-day ones. At least I'll
be an outpatient which means I won't have to spend sleepless nights
in hospital (sleepless nights at home are much more preferable,
there's books, TV, internet...)
Karen's pretty upset, but we at least know what to expect
this time - to some degree.
So much for my hair growing back.
So, spare a thought for us, or say a prayer or make a wish
or light a candle or direct some energy: whatever it is you do. It
helps."
Following Ian's chemo, Karen noted " It's going to be a
harder slog this time. The regime is 5 days of treatment, two weeks
with a treatment on Wednesday, then 5 days again. This is designed
to spread out the side effects and let Ian come home at nights as he
is more settled then. He will be in quarantine the third week of
treatment because of the risk of infection.
Please spread the message as far and wide as possible, I
find it disturbing when people don't know and we have to explain.
Secondly, please can I ask you to stay in touch as much as possible
- email, phone calls (after lunchtime), letters, fanzines, cards,
etc. Ian will be more awake this time and the time will drag and his
mind could dwell on the worst.
We are trying to fill out forms to claim the pension for
Ian. Luckily we are bright and reasonably intelligent otherwise we
would be having an uphill battle! I know they have to make sure
no-one is abusing the system, but some of the questions - wow. I
would hate being a dear old lady trying to fill one out! Ian's leave
runs out in May and we are hoping to have some sort of pension by
then or things will get really difficult!"

CONVENTION NEWS
KarenPender Gunn notes "We have closed the Basicon account. All
postcon reports are sent. A letter will go to Foodbank this week
containing a cheque for the accountbalance of $218.94. So ends our
convention running careers."
Mathew Frank who runs the convention information web page,
reports "BOBW in May will not have Stephen Furst. He has pulled out
due to "other commitments" as specified in contract. He will be
here in August, instead, with another guest TBA."
Niall Doran tells us "The Thylacon 2 guest list continues to
grow. In addition to Leanne Frahm(GoH), George RR Martin (GoH), and
Neil Gaiman (HG), we now have SarahDouglass as another Honoured
Guest.
Subject to final confirmation, Thylacon 2 will also host the
launch of Sarah's new book "Pilgrim", from Harper Collins.
Dr Margaret Scott, as seen on "Good News Week", will join us
for a similarly themed panel/competition, and we're also awaiting
news of a possible Virtual Guest to join us by tele-link.
Finally, if anyone sent us a membership payment before the
first of January and has not yet received a reply, please contact us
again with your details. The oversight is due to an administrative
change in the committee, but only affects two or three memberships.
