VALE ALLAN BRAY
South Australian fan Allan Bray died in Adelaide on April 24th. Allan
was a member of the South Australian Science Fiction Library, a
science fiction group active in the 1950s. He rediscovered fandom
after Aussiecon in 1975 and became a stalwart of Adelaide fandom,
being heavily involved in fanzine publication, convention running, and
club organisation, a complete list of his cointributions to SA fandom
would strain the page limits of this publication. He was always
willing to help in any fan related activity, even though this caused
him trouble at times - the Dalek he was constructing at the Weapons'
Research establishment almost cost him his job, and he came close to
legal action when it was discovered that a poetry book he was
distributing free with adverts for Paul Day's Black Hole Bookshop
contained some fairly pornographic material.
Allan's place was a delight to visit; he was an inveterate
collector of electronic bits and pieces, books, Goon Shows and old
motor vehicles and would delight in pulling out some obscure piece of
technology from the chaos. My own fanzine publishing career is deeply
endebted to Allan's cheerful help. Each visit to get electrostencils
made was punctuated by conversation, Goon Show quips and milk coffee
in shocking pink mugs with naked ladies as handles, heated in the
microwave.
Allan's marriage to Lesley rejuvenated him, and he widened his
scope to include more serious literature while never abandoning
science fiction. He was a good bloke and I'll miss him. My condolences
to Lesley.
Brian Forte and Zoran are planning a tribute fanzine.

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Enterprise members, collecting for the Good Friday Appeal, made it
into various television news services on the day. Irwin Hirsh
continued an old Bullsheet tradition by discovering an advert feauring
Bruce Barnes, this time in "The Football Record" 11-13/4/98. Bruce,
clad in tracksuit and joggers, features in an Adidas ad, opposite a
hulkingFremantle footballer, with the caption "Slip on our gear and
hey, you're James Clement." There was an article about Damien
Broderick in the Northcote Leader 22/4/98. Cath Ortlieb noted that the
group who displayed the "I Want To Be Evil" costumes at the Multiverse
Three Masquerade got a write-up in The Age EG 24/4/98, as part of
Australian Dance Week.
MEDICAL MATTERS
Justin Ackroyd is the latest in hospital. He has been suffering from a
cyst on the jaw that was removed, along with a couple of teeth. He's
supposed to be resting the jaw, and so is currently capable of talking
only one of the legs off a wooden horse, but he's getting better.
FAN FUNDS
The DUFF Deadline was extended to April 30th. Results in the next
issue. Maureen Kinkaid Speller has won TAFF and will represent Britain
at BucConeer.
CONVENTION NEWS
Craig Macbride reports that Swancon was tremendous fun.
Niall Doran sends updates on Thylacon II "Thylacon 2 (June
5-8) is pleased to announce that, pending equipment compatibility, J.
Michael Straczynski will join us as a virtual guest. He joins our four
attending guests, namely Nebula Award nominee George RR Martin, Leanne
Frahm, Neil Gaiman, and Sara Douglass, and, of course, our special
guest for Good Science Week: the incomparable Dr Margaret Scott.
Given intervening events, the convention theme will move on
from the strong green tone of the last Thylacon to the murky world of
bioethics, and the often wildly disparate moral and legal questions
this presents. Amongst other events, Thylacon 2 will also host the
launch of Sara Douglass' latest book "Pilgrim", and we're hoping to
arrange links to other virtual guests for a few added bonuses.
An event program for Thylacon 2 is now available from our
website at: http://www.trump.net.au/~s_newman/thylacon2/ alongside the
price list and registration form, hotel booking information, and a
host of other helpful bits & pieces. For those who are interested,
the deadline for advertisements in the program book isMay 22.
To finish, we can offer some good news for those who haven't
signed up yet. To tie in with a local promotion of the event, the
committee has decided to extend the early registration deadline &
delay the price-hike for attending memberships until May 5 -- so if
you still haven't signed up, get in quick!!!
