History Long How Few Remain Harry Turtledove Short "The
Undiscovered" William Sanders.
Philadelphia won the right to hold the 2001 WorldCon. (See convention
listings for further details.) It's now just over twelve months until
the last worldcon with the number 19 in front of the year - Aussiecon
Three.

IN PRINT
Altair #2 is now available and includes fiction by Stephen Dedman,
Kurt von Trojan and Brendan Carson. Richard Harland notes "Now that
the book[Taken By Force] is actually out - would it be possible to
put the publication in as a front page item of news. (A whole new
novel doesn't happen too often in Australian SF!)" The latest Slow
Glass Books Catalogue lists the following new Australian releases
also Gary Crew's The Fortress, Alison Goodman's Singing the Dogstar
Blues, Jonathan Harlen's The Crescent Moon, Ian Irvine's The Tower on
the Rift, Sally Odger's Translations In Celadon and Kurt von Trojan's
The Atrocity Shop.

TURNER NOVEL

George Turner's literary executor, Bruce Gillespie, notes "Readers of
George Turner's fiction will be pleased to know that his last novel,
currently titled DOWN THERE IN DARKNESS, has been bought by Dave
Hartwell at Tor Books and is scheduled to appear before the World
Convention in 1999. George had been apprehensive that his last novel
would not see print; Cherry Weiner, his agent, and I wish we could
send him a time-mail to tell him the book sold after all. Meanwhile,
George's last completed fiction, 20,000 words of a new novel, will
appear in the gigantic book of Australian short SF and fantasy that
has been edited by Jack Dann and Janeen Webb."

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Kim Wilkins reviews Anne Rice's Pandora in the Saturday Age 1/8/98.
Damien Broderick reviews Paul Davies The Fifth Miracle in The
Weekend Australian 8-9/8/98. The Lucy Sussex and Judith Buckrich
anthology She's Fantastical was mentioned in an overview of women's
press publications in the Saturday Age Good Weekend 8/8/98 Judith's
biography of George Turner is being seriously considered by Melbourne
University Press, but they are interested in more sponsorship for the
venture. Various Perth fans, including Grant Watson were involved in
a recent production of that noted piece of Tudor propaganda Richard
III. The production was mentioned in The West Australian and
Express. Noted Richardian Cath Ortlieb made no comment. There were
reports of a sniper in Bendigo (12/8/98) but it doesn't seem to have
been a member of either of the warring Bendigo science fiction
factions.

DARK CITY

David Hodson comments on Dark City "I noticed the opening night
viewing session for Dark City. So, have you seen it yet? If so, did
you stay to watch my name in the credits? (I'm so modest.) [Sorry.
not yet.]
I'm back in Sydney, working on Matrix. We were all invited to the
Sydney Dark City premiere, so I saw it last week. Very strange movie
... but I am justly (and collectively) proud of the effects work we
did. Not bad for a first movie credit. "

A JOCKETTE?

I'm sure that Jeanette will be taking out a contract on whoever uses
the above headline, but what the hell. Congratulations to Jeanette
Tipping-Allen and James (Jocko) Allen on the birth of their daughter
Genievive Allen at 8:45am Monday August 3. According to Jocko "She
weighed 3.2 kilos and both mother and baby are just great, although
Daddy wants a coffee!"

GUNNY WATCH
Karen Pender Gunn reports "The news is bad. The tumours in Ian's
liver have increased in size. All we know for sure at this point in
time is that they are probably not curable but possibly treatable. Dr
McKendrick, the oncologist, isn't able to give any figures at
present. The news was shattering to us both to say the least.
The oncologist wants to see him the week after next so we are
assuming that the situation isn't that urgent. He won't be on high
dose chemotherapy as is doesn't give much result for the bad side
effects. We don't know what the options are yet but it might be
medium dose chemotherapy. He won't be undergoing any more stem cell
filtering as its not much use now, so he won't be having a
transplant.
There are a few things in Ian's favour. He is young - only 40. This
was caught early, it could have been months if he hadn't caught an
infection in the liver. He is still on antibiotics. The doctor said
not to worry about the gallstone as 70% of people are able to get rid
of them without too much trouble without treatment. The pain from
that is controllable with Panadol and such. Until we have more
details it is hard to know where he will go from here. "

TRAVELLERS
Lucy Sussex, having arrived back in Melbourne, after teaching a week
of Clarion West in Seattle, reports `Apparently I was the first
southern hemisphere person asked to teach there. However, people did
not make comments about my cute accent, and seemed to understand what
I said. The students were the best class I ever had, talented,
intelligent and motivated. I gave them Violet Crumble and refused all
requests for Vegemite sandwiches.'

AUSSIECON THREE
Tim Richards notes "Aussiecon Three, the The 57th World Science
Fiction Convention (2-6 September 1999, Melbourne Convention Centre,
Melbourne, Australia), is pleased to announce the arrival of Progress
Report #2!
See it on our website at:
	http://www.aussiecon3.worldcon.org/"

FAN FUNDS
In File 770, Mike Glyer notes that Teddy Harvia will not be standing
for DUFF in 1999. Meantime, Guy Lillian has hinted that he might be
standing, but that he was hoping that the idea that Teddy was
standing was scaring off other potential candidates. Any other
rumours gratefully accepted.

THE METAPHYSICAL REVIEW 28/29 Bruce Gillespie 59 Keele St Collingwood
Vic 3066 gandc@mira.net. Two issues in one year from Bruce! (Four if
you consider that both are double issues.) Anyone would think he was
one of those hyperactive bright young things, rather than next year's
WorldCon Fan GoH. More superb writing than you can shake a stick at.
Send Bruce money to make sure we get a couple more issues before
