IN PRINT

Slow Glass Books Catalogue 131 notes the publication of Justin D'Ath's
The Upside Down Girl. Ion Newcombe notes that the following
Australian fiction was published in issue 22 of AntipodeanSF: "When
Words Come To Life" Shane Griffin and "Wait" James Overton. He adds
"AntipodeanSF's first issue next year, due to appear mid-January, will
be a special "False Millennium" edition, and will include eight
short-short stories all written by Aussie authors. "

Lucy Sussex notes " 'A Tour Guide in Utopia' has just appeared in
Oxford's Australian Women's Stories, along with all sorts of
mainstream notables."

GARTH NIX SEQUEL

Garth notes "Lirael (sort of a sequel to Sabriel) will be out in early
Fall 2000 from HarperCollins in the USA and around the same time from
Allen & Unwin Australia. At this stage, it looks like the Dillons will
be doing the jacket art, which is a blessing. I have put up some
sample chapters from Lirael (the latest draft, but unedited) on my
website.www.ozemail.com.au/~garthnix"

DISAPPEARING BOOKSHOP

Justin Ackroyd notes that Pulp Fiction was only temporarily in Rowe's
Arcade and has now moved back to its refurbished premises in the ANZAC
Square Arcade in Edward Street Brisbane.

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Russell Blackford takes on John Clute's review of the MUP
Encyclopaedia of Australian Science Fiction & Fantasy in the most
recent Nova Express and John Clute gets right of reply. The issue
maintains its Australian connections with a parody of Greg Egan by
Allen Varney and a review by Stephen Dedman.

WAS THIS THE AIM OF THE GAME?

Alan Stewart noted the following from games designer and
convention goer David Coutts "At 2.13am on Monday, 6th December in
Melbourne, Antonia Patricia Kalliakmanis Coutts was born. She is 2
weeks early, weighed in at 3kg & 10g (or 6 lb 10oz) and mother and
daughter are both doing very well. It's our first, so we're very
excited! David Coutts & Fotini ("Tina") Kalliakmanis"

MORE SLASH?

Clive Newall notes the following

"From Slashdot.org : Book Reviews: Souls in the Great Machine

Posted by Hemos on Thursday December 09, @08:59AM from the
i-luv-the-apocalypse dept. We've got another science fiction review
today, this time of Sean McMullen's Souls in the Great Machine. The
book is about a post-apocalyptic future with the re-birth of
technology. http://slashdot.org/books/99/12/09/091245.shtml"

LETTERATURE

Righ Saunders enlightens me on the nature of Slash Fiction "Well ...
Marc, it's a media-based fandom ... lots of shows in it :) The biggest
in Australia are XFiles & The Sentinel at the moment (both of which
are SF shows). It's fandom based on showing homosexual relationships
in TV shows between characters which are not canon. For example, that
Mulder and Skinner are boffing like bunnies ... and the like. Other
shows, like Herc/Xenaverse, are big in Oz too. There are several
places on the internet which have definitions of slash, and one of the
better ones would be http://www.mindspring.com/~kadru/slash.html .

It's not horror, and it's not a group dedicated to urination either.
We couldn't be called a group, not really, though the Sydney pile have
regular meetings and the Brisbanians get together whenever someone
feels it's been too long since the last meeting. The Melbourne,
Adelaide and Perth lot are rather silent, but they do exist :)

I hope that this clears things for you a little!
Righ"

Thanks Righ. Somewhere lodged in one of the remoter recesses of my
brain is a memory of Slash Fiction. I hadn't realized that it had spun
off its own fandom with conventions etc. Edward McArdle also sent me
corrected information and mentioned that there was a panel on slash at
Aussiecon Three. Who had time to get to panels?

The Editor of the Bullsheet just muttered "Bah! Humbug!" and added
something about arbitrarily determined dates.
