ON THE AIR

Adrian Sherlock reports "Following the pilot series of Damon Dark
(five episodes) screening on Channel 31 and at Aussiecon Three, a
new series has gone into pre-production, this time with the aim of
making it a completely professional production for sale to cable
television networks and mainstream video distributors. It will be
entirely digital and far more polished than the series we made for
community television.
The new series is being produced by Jennifer Douglas and directed
by Hollywood-trained Nick Black, a regular on 3RRR's Film Buff's
forecast. Auditions are being held in early January for the best
possible cast.
Sian O'Neale, Dr.Who Fanzine writer and publisher, is also involved
in the new series as a writer. We have plans to get Damon Dark off
Earth, visiting other planets and possibly other times, and we want
to see how far we can go with creating interesting-looking aliens,
too. So, any writers out there who think they have the ability
should get in touch before we're all booked up!"
They also have a web page as below:

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Kate Orman gets a brief mention as a correspondent in Graeme
Leech's Melba column in the Australian 31/12/99. That British bod
who came to Australia to collect a couple of Hugos last September,
Dave Langford, has a piece in the Christmas/New Year issue of New
Scientist. And what a surprise. Lots of futurology stuff in the
papers on January 1st 2000. John Baxter gets a piece on SF Film in
the Age Good Weekend, which also has a piece on future predictions
by David Dale, who mistakenly attributes the first mention of
cryogenics to a 1964 book by Robert Ettinger. There's a piece on
Graeme Base in the Saturday Extra and an article on where sf films
got it right or wrong by Shane Danielsen in the Australian. Jack
Dann's Counting Coup was noted as one of 2000's novels to watch in
The Australian 1-2/1/2000 Sara Douglass has a letter regarding
University pass rates in the Age Good Weekend 8/1/2000. Damien
Broderick notes "Spikish thing by me, `Stranger than Fiction',
opened Courier-Mail 1/1/2000 supplement on the Future. Nice folks,
those Brisbaners." Race Matthews has the featured letter - dealing
with Credit Unions - in the Age 10/1/2000.

SICKNESS & DISEASES
David Arblaster noted "Jamie [Reuel] was seriously injured in a
motor accident on the Tuesday before Christmas. He has had
successful microsurgery to save his left foot and a number of bones
in his lower leg are badly broken but longer term prospects of
recovery are good."
In a later note, David added "When I saw him last Jamie was
optimistic of being moved down to Warrnambool to be near / at his
parents place, notwithstanding the fact that his leg still had pins
and so on in it."
Yet further information, from Julian Warner, noted that Jamie had a
further operation on January 10 and is hoping to be at his parents'
home in Warnambool on Saturday.
David continues "I have since struck further medical trouble of my
own, another cyst having blown on my right lung. Fortunately the
preventatative operations that I had are keeping the lung up and
the air leak local; so no chest drain has been necessary so far. A
flat tyre on the road to recovery you might say."

FAN ACTIVITY
Susan Batho notes "Would you believe I got an Australian
Postgraduate Research Award which means after 30 years I get to go
back to full-time study, to complete my PhD in, of all things,
fanac.
It still feels strange that they paid me last semester to teach a
course on fans (under the guise of Media Audiences)....
Life is still full of wonder...."
Sue Ann Barber's move to Melbourne should occur this Saturday
15/1/2000.

FAN FUNDS
The 2000 DUFF race is shaping up to be interesting, with rumours of
candidates from Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia.

CONVENTION NEWS

Rose Mitchell reports on the bid for the 2002 Natcon in Melbourne.
"Plans are progressing well; in fact things are coming together
rapidly. Lots of fans around Australia have offered support and/or
a commitment to be involved. This is indeed encouraging and the
feedback and advice we've received has been extremely useful.
Rose lists the core committee as follows:"Rose Mitchell, Nick
Price, Bev Hope and David Arblaster (Programming), Paula McGrath
(Site Liaison), Sharon Nebel (Treasurer), Frank Dersken are the
core group -- the people who do the mundane crap. " She also listed
a large number of supporters more than we had on the Australia in
'99 Bidding Committee
Rose is looking for feedback from people on what they would like to
see at a Melbourne NatCon. Contact her at mitchell@vicnet.net.au

CLUB NEWS
Trevor Gensch notes in the aus.sf news group "Belated
congratulations to the Brisbane Doctor Who Fan club on reaching the
official 10 year milestone on the 7th January 2000.
On 7th January 1990 the club first met at Queensland University of
Technology, B Block, Room BLT3, Brisbane. The stories screened were
Battlefield and An Unearthly Child. I can still remember very
fondly the roar that issued from the crowd assembled when Bessie
was unveiled.
Congratulations, and here's to another 10 years!"
