IN PRINT

Lucy Sussex notes "I have just signed the contract for "The Queen
of Erewhon" to appear in David Hartwell's Year's Best Science
Fiction, to be published by the Harper Collins/Avon etc empire.

FUNNY THAT HE SHOULD MENTION IT

Chuck McKenzie writes "The forthcoming anthology of Australian
speculative humour (working title: Australien Absurdities) is
still going ahead, and the editors have received some excellent
submissions from both well-established and relatively unknown
local SF writers. However, we're still open to submissions until
March 1st, so if anyone out there has any humorous SF, Fantasy or
Horror pieces sitting in their back drawer, send them in. For a
copy of the specs sheet, contact either Chuck McKenzie (PO Box
87A, South Strathfield, NSW 2136. E-mail - chuck@connexus.net.au)
or Tansy Rayner Roberts (Mailboxes Etc, Suite 130, 60 Liverpool
St, Hobart, Tas 7000. E-mail - troberts@postoffice.utas.edu.au)."

IN ELECTRONS

Ion Newcombe reports "AntipodeanSF issue 23 is now available for
viewing. This month's "False Millennium" issue features eight
stories by Aussie authors in celebration of AntiSF's second year
of publication. "Boom Baby Boom" Carol Ryles; "Teach The Children
Well" Geoffrey Maloney; "Writer's Hands" Edwina Harvey; "The
Colonel" Trent Jamieson; "The World" Owen D. Godfrey; "The Book"
Carole Nomarhas; "There's a Party in My Head and Everyone's
Invited" Andrew Sullivan; "Turning Off The Twentieth Century" Rob
Bleckly " http://www.nor.com.au/users/antisf

NEW DAMON DARK!

"The new series of DAMON DARK has been completely recast from
scratch and although Adrian Sherlock was screen tested, it now
looks certain that Bruce Hughes, who starred as The Commander in
the science fiction hit Ocean Girl (series three) will be taking
over the lead role of Damon Dark, defending Earth against the
evil Quantum Mind known as The Jenn Collective. Joining him are
the beautiful Fiona Harris as Veruca Stone and American born
Randall Berger as The Coordinator of Department Six. Andrew
Clarke, double Logi winner and star of All the Rivers Run, was
also considered for the role of Damon Dark. Adrian Sherlock first
played Damon in a ten minute silent movie shot on Super 8 in
1992. He then shot the first 23 minutes of a feature film in
which he played Damon in 1994, only to have the project aborted
after technical problems abounded and the budget for reshooting
was not available. He then played Damon in a pilot called
"Timeslip" in 1997 with co-producer Susan Anderson. Finally on
November 23, 1998, shooting commenced on "Maddox" for channel
31's ERA TV. Along with the re-cut version of "Timeslip" and the
final episode "It's after me", these comprised the five episode
series shown on Channel 31 in September 1999. Adrian is sad not
to have at least had a "Regeneration Episode", in which Damon
could change bodies, but suffice it to say, somewhere along the
line, the aliens have transferred Damon Dark's mind into another
body...maybe he just doesn't remember it. But to paraphrase
Dr.Who,"I'm sure my future's in safe hands!" Good luck to the new
Damon!" The Sherlock Productions team.

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Brian Forte's piece on having his house burgled appears in The
Age 14/1/2000 Terry Dowling reviews Greg Egan's Teranesia, Kim
Wilkins' Grimoire, Hartwell & Broderick's Centaurus, and
Blackford, Ikin & McMullen's Strange Constellations in The
Weekend Australian review 15-16/1/2000. David Russell notes that
a photo of Shane Morrissey, surrounded by various Star Wars
characters, appeared in the Herald Sun's Connect Computer section
19/1/2000 Sara Douglass receives a three page write-up in The
Australian Magazine 22-23/1/2000

IAN NICHOLS HITCHED

"Ian Nichols, strolling poet and Fan GOH of the coming Swancon
25, was married to Susan Wright in their Doubleview home on
Friday 14 Jan in a civil ceremony in the presence of about forty
guests. Among the fans present were Dave Luckett, Sally Beasley,
Iain Henderson, Susan Margaret, John and Sarah McDouall. Also
present was famous fakefan Katherine Chopin, who pointedly wore
black, in the role of the Groom's Past. The aging of this neck of
the fannish woods was demonstrated by the topics of conversation
- receding hairlines, advancing waistlines, the difficulty of
getting scurf out of one's spectacles and reminiscences of
conventions long past.
The bride performed a minor faux pas during the exchange of vows
by agreeing to take Ian as her wife. The groom demonstrated his
own good taste by displaying the lipstick on his nipple; his
Speech was enlivened by an avowal of his lust for life. A
scabrous section of the assembled multitudes gave this the
charivari it deserved. The happy couple ejected the last guests
at around midnight, which gave them just enough time to clean the
place up before departing to a honeymoon in the Malaysian
highlands." Sally Beasley & Dave Luckett

SICKNESS & DISEASES

David Arblaster reports that it's Beverley Hope's turn in
the hospital. She has just had her gall bladder removed. The
operation was successful and the surgeon reported that her
overall health should improve as a result of the operation.

PERIPATETIC FANS

Adelaide's Brian Forte has been in Melbourne for a couple
of months, doing contract work for Telstra. He has stayed long
enough to be conned into doing the February Nova Mob talk. While
here, his house in Adelaide was burgled, but without too much
material loss. Lewis Morley & Marilyn Pride made a flying visit
to Melbourne to work on a commercial using one of Lewis's
spacesuits. Given that the temperature on the day of the shot was
predicted to be in the mid 30s, Lewis was glad he wasn't in the
suit. Karen Johnston has been sojourning in Western Australia.
Meanwhile, it seems that half the Aussiecon Three Committee is
leaving the country. Helen Connor is off to the US and Europe.
Mark Loney has been in Switzerland and, what with David Evans'
move to the U.S. it leads one to ask how much profit Aussiecon
Three did make :-)

FAN FUNDS

There are assorted rumours concerning the 2000 FFANZ
race, to send an Australian fan to New Zealand for Con d'Or,
which suggest that we should see a ballot paper real soon now.

CONVENTION NEWS

Aussiecon Three members are entitled to nominate items
for the 2000 Hugo Awards, to be presented at Chicon 2000 in
Chicago in August. Copies of the nomination forms have been sent
out to all members. To vote in the awards, you must be a member

MELBOURNE IN 2002 NATCON BID
Rose Mitchell reports: "Enthusiasm continues to grow for the
Melbourne-based Natcon bid for 2002. Fen around the country are
beginning to take up aspects of the planning. We've even had
interest from America, albeit merely to catch up on how far along
we are with arrangements.
The Bid Group is committed to making this truly a Natcon, ie,
involving fen from around the country, who are discouraged from
'marking their own territory', to draw an analogy. Just because
the Bid Group is based in Melbourne, doesn't necessarily mean
that the Con must be wholly and solely Melbourne run. After all,
this is the 21st century and the technology is readily available
to enable us to work on a project remote from our physical
location.
Which brings me to the reason why the particular time of year has
been earmarked, ie, Queen's Birthday weekend. It was the only
'NATIONAL' long weekend we could identify that did not clash with
another convention. The only other national long weekend we
could find was Easter, but as Swancons usually book this out,
Easter was discarded as a viable date. Unfortunately Western
Australian doesn't get the Queens Birthday holiday at the same
time as the rest of Australia -- this would be a good argument
for mutual recognition across state boundaries.
If anybody can come up with a date when all of Australia gets a
long weekend (except for Easter and of course Christmas -for
obvious reasons), we sure want to hear from you. We are in the
final stages of negotiations with our preferred venue and guests
of honour, so its not too late -- yet.
	Contact Rose Mitchell on mitchell@vicnet.net.au."
