IN PRINT
Kate Orman has a story "Cactus Land" in the August 2000 issue of
Realms of Fantasy. Sean McMullen's short story "Mask of Terminus"
appears in the October 2000 Analog.
The Slow Glass Catalog #139 lists a plethora of Australian new
releases. Novels listed are Kingdoms of the Seventh Pool Kirsty
Anderson, Time of the Wolf Julie D'Arcy, The Forbidden Land,
Kate Forsyth, Ferren and the Angel Richard Harland, Omega
Christine Harris, Black Eagle Rising Kate Jacoby, Dj Vu John
Larkin, Son of the Shadows Juliet Marillier, The Green Prince
Sophie Masson, The Castle Garth Nix, Blackout Michael Pryor, The
Maze of the Beast Emily Rodda and The Protector Stewart Wochen.
Richard Harland adds "Ferren and the Angel comes out from
Penguin on September 4th. Yes, I've swapped publisher - and also
genre. From a fantasy-ish science fiction of the Eddon & Vail
books, to out-and-out fantasy."
In addition there is a collection, White Time Margo Lanagan, and
a series of Critical works from Nimrod Publications: Hyperdreams:
Damien Broderick's Space/Time Fiction Russell Blackford; Michael
Frayn and the Fantasy of Everyday Life Rosaleen Love; Opulent
Darkness: The Werewolves of Tanith Lee  Justine Larbalestier;
Towards a "Good Death": The Fantasy Fiction of C.S. Lewis and the
Experience of Reading Cath Filmer-Davies; Beyond the Eternal
Champion: Fantasies of Michael Moorcock David Connell; Betwixt

Morris Normal Talbot; A Glance From Nowhere: Sheri S. Tepper's

The Science Fiction Novels of Cherry Wilder Yvonne Rousseau.

FAN FUNDS

Regarding the GUFF photos that Irwin Hirsh mentioned loading to
www.egroups.com/files/ozfan-history, Irwin adds "Rumour has it
that you have to subscribe to the ozfan-history group to sneak a
peek at the files section."

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

The Australian Review of Books August 2000 has Damien Broderick's
article "The Future is Now" as its cover feature. The issue also
has an interview with Canberra librarian & sf critic Colin
Steele, a letter from Sophie Masson and a piece on books by Linda
Jaivin, author of Rock & Roll Babes from Outer Space.
Rowena Cory's book The Last T'En features in an article on
romantic fiction in The Weekend Australian Review August
12-13/2000.
Cath Ortlieb passed on an article about Pat Kerslake from The
Gazette August 16 2000. Kerslake is doing a PhD in science
fiction. I trust her research for that is slightly better than
her historical research, given that she is quoted as saying "The
satellite was virtually invented in 2001: a Space Odyssey."
Jack Dann's mainstream work Bad Medicine is reviewed in The
Weekend Australian August 19-20 2000 and in The Sunday Age August
20 2000.
Nova Express 19 features an article about Greg Egan by Russell
Blackford.

EGAN AWARDED

Greg Egan's "Border Guards" tied for best novelette in this
year's Locus Poll (Locus August 2000)

2000 DITMARS

Regarding the 2000 Ditmars, Grant Watson wrote "Ditmar nomination
forms will be released along with the wrap-up progress report for
Swancon 2000, which should hopefully be included with the second
progress report for Swancon 2001, as soon as possible.
Copies of the form will be made available to anyone who asks and
will be distributed as widely as we can manage at the same time.
So yes, they *are* coming. Really soon.
And yes, we are very inexcusably late about it.
	And we are sorry.
Please e-mail swancon25@megabyte.murdoch.edu.au if you would like
to have a number of forms sent to you, and I will endeavour to
get them sent ASAP."

SICKNESS AND DISEASES
Rose Mitchell passed on the following from Jamie Reuel "I have
had some recent improvements in health. The flesh wounds are all
healed and the bones don't move by themselves anymore. Today the
physio showed me how to walk with crutches. The surgeon states I
won't need surgery for a while. No steel pin in the bone
required. A most exciting week."
Sue Ann Barber's news is less pleasant "A routine medical exam
for my new employer showed that I am diabetic. Not entirely
unexpected seeing as every immediate family member and a
grandparent have suffered the same fate.
What does this all mean? Immediately it means I can't indulge in
any of the fannish food groups - no chocolate, no fatty stuff, no
soft drinks, no desserts and a lot less alcohol at parties. These
are now all evil foods and will be called as such. At this stage
I'm only on tablets whilst I'm still being assessed. The
assessment may take a while, depending on how my body reacts.
Currently the tablets and I don't agree (I'll spare you the
details :) ), but hopefully that will all settle down."

LETTERATURE

Chris Nelson writes, in response to my noting the death
of Sir Alec Guinness "Alas, fewer obits have mentioned his
excellent sf film "The Man in the White Suit". It's usually
considered just as one of the Ealing comedies and does have comic
elements, but it also explores a classic "what if" situation
quite well. (The ending is a cop out, but, hey, this was the
50s.)"
