HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY SPUTNIK! The first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1,
was sent into orbit around the earth 50 years ago on October 4th.
MARTIN PEARSON will be performing his hilarious (IMHO -
Edwina) "Unfinished Spelling Errors of Bolkien: (an irreverent
occasionally musical homage to Tolkien) in Geelong Guides Hall on
Friday 5th October. Cost $20 at the door ($15 bought in advance) The
double-CD of "The Unfinished Spelling Errors" will be available for

LUCY SUSSEX, author of Deersnake, My Lady Tongue and The Patternmaker
among others, will be conducting a spec fic writing workshop at the

CONGRATULATIONS TO Aliette de Bodard, whose first story is published
in Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine #31. Aliette recently won a
Writers of the Future Award.
CONGRATULATIONS to SIMON BROWN. His story Tarans, published in of
Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine issue 24 (edited by Edwina
Harvey) received a Honorary Mention in Gardner Dozois' Years Best SF
listing for 2006.

DEATHS:
MADELEINE L'ENGLE, author of "A Wrinkle in Time" , and described
as "a writer whose tales transcended both genre & generation" passed
away on Sept. 6th, aged 88, (Reported by Brock Ulfsen on the Visions
List.)
ROBERT JORDAN (James Oliver Rigney Jr.) author of "The Wheel of Time"
fantasy series passed away on Sept 16th from a rare blood disease. He
was 58 years old. (Reported by Brock Ulfsen on the Visions List.

TERRY DARTNALL, Australian author, passed away on 24th Sept from
pancreatic cancer. Our sympathies to his wife, Wendy, and family.

HIP HOORAY! Fan, author and publisher, JEAN WEBER who is now walking
without crutches (though she needs a walking stick on uneven ground,)
following a a hip-replacement operation last month. Her other hip
will be operated on in November.
