Artists War: Artist Guest of Honor Michael Whelan (center), Japanese artist Naiyko Sato (left) and Bob Eggleton (brush visible only) did seven paintings in two hours, often trading the painting to each other to complete. When Whelan purchased the supplies for this War, he made sure to buy something that none of them had ever worked in - a water-based oil paint. The paintings were still a bit wet when they were auctioned off later to benefit the convention, so the committee agreed to ship the paintings a week later after they dried. The paintings sale prices sold from $650 to an astonishing $16,000.00!! (This is one of, if not, the highest price ever paid at an S-F convention auction.)
