Toastmaster - Tad Williams

Tad WilliamsMy first encounter with Tad Williams was his appearance as Toastmaster at BayCon '97, a regional SF convention in the San Francisco Bay Area. He worked the room at the Meet the Guests reception like he was born to the job. I found out later that he may as well have been, what with his peripatetic background and time in front of an audience via his radio show experience. But he wasn't Toastmaster just because he doesn't use harsh sibilants when he's speaking into a microphone. He was there because of his skill as a writer as least as much as for his talents as a raconteur. I knew this, so I sought out his books. I wasn't disappointed. His novels depict well-wrought, unique worlds that don't go for the easy solutions far too common in others' works. This pattern was established with his first novel, Tailchaser's Song (1985, DAW), and has continued to this day with his current work, a four-volume series entitled Otherland.

Tad's presence as Toastmaster at ConJosé promises to enhance the weekend for anyone who comes into contact with him. Everyone on the committee is thrilled to have him with us, and we know you will enjoy meeting him and listening to him speak.
